Unsatisfactory Conditions in Montreal Hospital

DRAFT

Quote of the day: "Can anybody be truly responsible for themselves before they have been deprogrammed?"

The following is a report of the conditions which existed where I was to undergo major surgery at hospital x in Montreal in September of 2012. During my stay there I had a major operation; a re-operation 24 hours after my primary surgery to correct a complication which resulted in a significant loss of haemoglobin and a possible significant drop in blood pressure: and a nine day stay at their facility for recuperation. That the condition of blood loss and possible blood pressure loss are nowhere to be found in the surgical notes is in itself a red flag. I was not to discover until I returned to Vancouver and had a blood test 14 days post-op that my haemoglobin was down from 142x to 99x and that this reading was such after two weeks from the initial incident is an indication of how much haemoglobin I lost from the initial incident until the reading of 99x. That this blood loss was not immediately rectified, i.e. by transfusion, is suspect at the very least.

Pre-existing conditions of neglect
  1. Care and prevention of pre-op constipation
  2. Pain management
  3. Safety
  4. Instructional materials
  5. Staff competency
  6. Accommodations
  7. Medical competence
The list above outlines the conditions under which I was to be subjected to during my stay at x hospital. The main complaint is that of a medical malfeasance and that I was not given the proper indicated treatment during a re-operation to correct a complication arising from my primary surgery. The condition I am suffering is posterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The indicated treatment for this condition is transfusion, which was apparently not given to me during my re-operation. The rest of the list outlines a prevailing atmosphere of incompetence, disregard and neglect.

It is my intention to pursue this matter legally. Due to the medical inattention to detail I may be blind for the rest of my life. This was not part of the deal.

Update Dec 14,12

Post op 11 weeks. many complications, including organizational pneumonia, bronchial infection, and optic nerve damage resulting in loss of 40 percent loss of vision including the ability to read. But the surgery looks great, haha. Silver lining: I may not be able to see well, but i am getting a whole new perspective on the world. Something like "now that i am blind, I can." and, I have finally figured out how to sing correctly. 45 years chasing that little devil so, even thought I have all these complications and such, my life is going is, really, really, well. I am achieving my dreams. It's quite a feeling.

Lasaga

Work in Progress - update, 17, 27, 28 October,6th Nov 2012 - nb
- this is stalled. I am having complications with my eyes at the moment, the focal points in each eye as it happens, making it diffifult to do stuff like this. I can see the world, just not the precise things I am looking at.

For those what don't know, I have been on an psychological treadmill since 1989, spanning some 20 odd years or so of incidental, occasional, directed and even focused therapy, concerning my 61 years of experience and the effect and consequences the chaotic and unstable circumstances of my childhood had on me and my ability to experience my reality directly, my feelings engaged and appropriate to the day. For most of my life, I have been disconnected from my feelings, one of the 'tragically hip,' to cool for school, and out of step with my reality, unable to interact emotionally on anything but a superficial level, gauging my 'reactions' externally, with no inner gauge save uncertainty. Basically I was either angry or waiting to be angry. A sociopath, incapable of empathy and/or spontaneous feelings, isolated, alone, and ultimately, confused. As of spring of 2010 and for a couple of years now, having made a breakthru regarding my anger/flight/fight mechanism, I believe I have been tapping directly into the emotional landscape of my very early childhood; experiencing first hand, long forgotten, dormant emotions that are now coming to the forefront of my psyche as I, the adult, am host, witness, and guardian to these emotions. And I, the adult, am watching as I become  'whole' in this regard, as I 'allow' these feeling from long ago to express themselves freely, and the yesterday me and the today me work in conjunction, forming, somehow, a new person in the doing. It's tricky, as I thread my way thru emotions that feel like they are 'now' but are actually from long ago. And I am learning how to experience these repressed feelings that overlay or underlay the present day scenarios without somehow 'identifying' with them too strongly, letting them happen as if they are their own entities, independent, yet connected. It seems to be working. I, the 'me' that everyone feels in themselves, am starting to experience my emotional reality now, and not like before, not hours from now, or days or even years from now. It's a very different game from the one I was playing before, spontaneous, unpredictable, scary in some regards, but it's powerful, and reassuring. I may be sad, or devastated, or upset, or even joyful, but at least now I feel like I am standing on firm ground, facing whatever is in my path with strength and conviction. My feelings, once a wasteland of depression, anger and uncertainty, are now signposts, guides, comforts that help me understand where I am in all of this. And I am no longer afraid.
Case in point. My recent surgery. I am now at home convalescing, post op 3 weeks or so. And a friend, my best friend, has made me lasagna. For my convalescence  Yum. Lasagna. I love lasagna. And I love her. Except now, she has thrown a wrench in to the matrix of our relationship. She has put spinach in the lasagna. Green, slimy, yucky spinach. All mixed in everywhere. And there is now a fly in my pasta pie. How can I look this gift horse in the mouth? And how could she do this to me? I did once extol the virtues of a store bought spinach spanicapizza that I was miraculously able to eat, once, a while ago. Perhaps she remembers that and has acted accordingly. But it doesn't matter. I am compromised by my surgery and the morphine I am on, and am weak and vulnerable, and in no way able to deal with this situation rationally. I am very emotional at this time, and so, angry, pissed off, conflicted, dejected. Bummed. I can't eat this. Never mind I haven't tried it. I can see the slimy green goo with my own two eyes, and I have food issues. Childhood food issues. Foods that I didn't like literally stuffed down my throat by a father who was pissed (and most definitely driven by his own childhood, wartime and family ghosts) that his son won't eat what is in front of him. Issues that I have been working on for years that still haunt me physiologically. Try rationalizing psychology to a gag reflex. Ha. And now, in my weakened state, my best friend, a surrogate mother on some levels, has joined the enemy, and is, in that 'gotta do it because to do otherwise is to insult' way, making me eat what I can not stomach.

And so the lasagna, a gift from this friend, meant to be a comfort and a help during my convalescence, sits in the fridge. Decomposing. A big pan of it. Drying out while I dither. What to do with it. I don't know, but I better do something soon or it will go bad, and I can't countenance that. A big waste, and a no no in my book. Days later I decide to try it. Cut a hunk of it out of the pan, heat it up in the toaster oven. Yumm, it sure smells good. Maybe it'll be OK  Maybe it's all in my hed. But no. It is what it is, regardless of whether or not it's in my hed. Spinach lasagna, the spinach dominating the lasagna like a bad, pseudo Mexican hot sauce on quality nosh. My stomach is revolting as my gorge rises. I can't eat it. But not to be defeatist, to not denigrate the gift of my friend, I try again, picking out all the spinach, which takes a while. And I lose a lot of the ricotta cheese too, cause it and the spinach have bonded, and won't be separated. Finally, I give it another go, cold, but sans spinach. And,... it's not bad. I can handle it. I think. Even like it, there are meatballs, even if every once in a while my taste buds snag on a tenacious piece of spinach yuck hiding in the yummy tomato sauce. I finish off the piece, somewhat satisfied if a tad exhausted by the ordeal, and cut up the rest of the pie, put it into separate containers, and put them in the fridge for later.

Days later again, in the fridge it sits. Untouched. Silent. My eyes avoid it when I'm making my peckish rounds, looking for the right thing. It's just so much hassle when all I want is to pop something yummy into the toaster oven for a quick bite. I bought the toaster oven specifically for that purpose, for this exact time, so that I wouldn't have to prepare or cook during my convalescence. So here I am, today, days later, hungry, feeling reasonably stable, looking for something easy to eat, and the lasagna finally catches my eye. I remember the meatballs, and the sauce. They were good, the pasta just right. So I go for it. Such is denial. Surely the spinach is not that bad. I place it in the oven, heat it up. Cautious, but days away from the initial tasting, smells good, and hoping that it will alright this time. I have confronted the enemy, and I have won. It will be OK.

Simultaneously, coincidentally, something else is bothering me. I have just had an email from a friend who hosts a "my mother's story" site where people talk about their mothers. Mostly, as far as I know, a site for loving, understanding, personal mom stories, and stories about mom that explain the discrepancies of the historians writing therein. Only I am having a problem with this concept. Because my mother left me, when I was 5. And rejected me henceforth. Not my sister, just me. And it seems to me that while the site is for 'understanding' and 'forgiving' moms, who, after all, had done their best, and were really only acting in their children's own best interests, even if we didn't understand their motivations at the time, the underlying concept is flawed. That it's all very fine this appreciate the bad mommy thing, but that in trying to understand our mother's story, our own stories can get minimized. Where's the site for 'our inner children,' or, 'who's going to stand up for child that once was?' And are we not somehow the traitors within as we conjure forth comforting images of women, who for better or worse, abandoned this little boy or that little girl in their times of need.

For I can now see that little boy that I once was, from a distance, just as clear as now I can see some stranger child on the street that is being mistreated or abused by a uncaring or abusive parent, I can see how that little boy was me, and how my mother mistreated me, betrayed me, rejected me even as I longed for her comforting touch in the face of my father's fury. I can look at that little boy and feel empathy for what he was going thru. And I, and the child within still long for our mother's touch. For she did touch me with comfort once. Even if it was only in the womb, and herself perhaps not as consciously committed to my well being as might be hoped for. For a brief time, I knew of a mother's touch. Of her warmth. Of her comfort. Of the caress of her inner most self. And on some level, I can feel that longing. Now. Here. Still.

So here I am, standing in front of this lasagna, this loving gift made for me for while I am infirm, convalescing, a gift well intentioned and good. Only this gift, made with love, this gift contains landmines; is a culinary war zone, ambivalence the heady spice of its component parts, and it is tearing me apart as I juggle the love and caring with the revulsion and abuse contained within. And as I stand, in the kitchen, this adult, as cognizant of my psychology and situation as anyone might be, and more than just some, I cry and blubber as I pull this lasagna apart, digging out the yucky bits so that I can eat the tattered, cooling remains. It's not supposed to happen this way; it's not fair, at least not from my inner toddler's point of view, and I am really sobbing now, grief stricken as I deal with the disgusting spinach which is keeping me from the comfort I need, all 61 years of me together now, in this moment, the anger and frustration and loss and indignation of years of repression and untoward circumstance protesting this offending pie, tears streaming from my eyes as I pick thru the culinary rubble. No mom to hug me and make me feel better as she 'fixes' everything so that I can eat without fear that some slimy green yucky thing will attack my throat and send me puking to the bathroom. And it's just too much for my vulnerable state, and so I stand there, alone, defeated, sobbing, as I stare blankly at the bloody, pasty remains lying before me.

So what's the point? This is me. Emotionally. Down to the very bottom of my psyche, or at least as far as I have been able to dig. There is no uncertainty here. No act being put on to manipulate or deceive. This is how I feel, and these are my feelings, and I know what is going on here. Here, I am, if not the expert, at least the source. They say that there is nothing certain in life, but for me, this is certainty. I am what is going on here, and I can feel it all the way down. As John Lennon says in "God," "I just believe in me, Yoko and me, And that's reality" And for me, that's certainty. And for a person who for 50 yerrs or so had no idea what I felt, that is something.

That part of me that first felt this, the 'inner child,' the repressed and forgotten 'inner child' that lurks beneath the surface of my everyday adult life, my adult 'persona,' and that latches on to any present day situation that will give it some form of vent, that part of me is finally free to hurt. And hurt it does, no matter that I am an adult and 'know' what it is that I am experiencing, knows an abreaction from a hawk or a handsaw. It hurts all of me. Because it is pain, pure and simple, pain from days gone by perhaps, but pain that is part of my experience today, now, with that sabotaging lasagna pie and the spinach that has come back to haunt me. And I have now experienced it, felt it, acknowledged it, let it do what it needs to do so that I can move on and deal with my situation with all the cards face up on the table. Will I eat spinach now. Who knows. But at least the spinach now stands a chance, for now, I am open to the experience.

Working Title: The making and break of a socio/psycho/path

Introduction (This is a work in progress. updated sept 03, 12, nb - update Nov 11'12).

Thesis - Sociopaths are by nature, nurtured. Thais is, given a select few abberations of human nauter, sociopaths are a culteral phenonemon, products of their various environments.

This is mostly about nurture. I was a basic kid. The tabla was maybe special, but definitely rasa. I was put under extreme stresses which had a negative impact upon me, and at around age nine, the stresses now intolerable, I disassociated. This was the foundation and beginning of my sociopathic tendancies. At age 39, I had a transformational experience, "The Event," which exposed the disassociated parts of my self. Still exhibiting characteristics of sociopathy, I began to work on myself, and over time, did indeed start to put humpty back together again, and in a less sociopathic way. At age 60, all the work I did on myself came together and I individuated, moving from a sociopathic model to a differentiated, self actualized, socially responsible ex narcissistic model. What follows is just notes working on this idea. Sorry for the mess. Don't know if I will get back to this. I seem to have moved on. Heded somewhere but not sure where yet.
  • In these pages, I am going to explore, in the main, Identity. I.e., what I think that is?
  • This will also be a discussion of
    • Antisocial Personality Disorder vs Sociopathy vs Psychopathy
      • Behavior patterns (ASPD) vs "social factors?" (Sociopathy) vs "personality characteristics?" (psychop)
      • "Sociopathy is also distinct from ASPD as well as psychopathy. Hare writes that the difference between sociopathy and psychopathy may "reflect the user's views on the origins and determinates of the disorder." The term sociopathy may be preferred by sociologists that see the causes as due to social factors. The term psychopathy may be preferred by psychologists who see the causes as due to a combination of psychological, genetic, and environmental factors." "wikipedia" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder#Psychopathy_and_sociopathy )
      • How they apply to me
        • ASPD
          • As a general diagnosis, I sit well within this type, although in terms of the destinction of behavioral vs social causes, think I move easily out of this catagory and into the next, i.e. sociopathy
          • Irresponsibility - up until 'the event,' I had no real concept of responsibility. Going nowhere fast, fake my responsbilities (soil checker et al),
          • manipulative - always looking for a way to get what I want other than directly - until the event, I didn't know how to ask. That's one of the reasons I stole
          • Criminal behavior - extreme kleptomania - stole from everyone, everywhere, B&E's (mostly related to cross dressing), drugs (some selling, mostly user, not addicted,
          • pathalogical liar - lied extremely and to everybody - i grew up in a house of liars - it was 'normal.'
          • Affect? What is this? Tragically hip?
          • Failure to conform to social norms - in spades, i.e. dress (biker/loner)
          • Irritability - bad temper, impulsive, angry. Directed most of my anger to things - was unable to
          • (DSM) Reckless disregard for the safety of self or others - especially on a motorcycle, reckless in the extreme
          • (DSM) Lack of remorse after having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another person - mostly stealing, but in 'relationships,' did not have any idea of how I was hurting someone
        • Sociopathy
          • "Sociopathy is chiefly characterized by something wrong with the person's conscience. They either don't have one, it's full of holes like Swiss cheese, or they are somehow able to completely neutralize or negate any sense of conscience or future time perspective. Sociopaths only care about fulfilling their own needs and desires - selfishness and egocentricity to the extreme. Everything and everybody else is mentally twisted around in their minds as objects to be used in fulfilling their own needs and desires. They often believe they are doing something good for society, or at least nothing that bad. The term "sociopath" is frequently used by psychologists and sociologists alike in referring to persons whose unsocialized character is due primarily to parental failures (usually fatherlessness) rather than inherent features of temperament. However, this may only describe the "common sociopath", as there are at least four (4) different subtypes -- common, alienated, aggressive, and dyssocial. Commons are characterized mostly by their lack of conscience; the alienated by their inability to love or be loved; aggressives by a consistent sadistic streak; and dyssocials by an ability to abide by gang rules, as long as those rules are the wrong rules."  http://www.angelfire.com/zine2/narcissism/antisocial_sociopath_psychopath.html
          • I identify with this type the most so far, in terms of parental 'failures' and with regard to the alienated and dyssocial subtypes. In my case, inability to love or be loved, and dyssocial in my dysability to be 'a team player.'
          • Egocentricity - to an extreme, and in terms of pre vs post "event," dysfunctionally so. Whereas now, I am still egocentric, as in 'individuated,' this reflected in my new ability to work well within a social construct.
          • Exaggerated Sexuality - hmmm, this is a tricky one, in that I had the 'just wanna fuck, get into her pants and get the fuck out of there' thing, and I  have the transsexual thing going on. This needs to be developed
          • Callousness - no feelings, pre 'event,' so therefore, no feelings for others. Just didn't know how to relate that way. This is connected to empathy it seems, although maybe that's why empathy is listed in psychopathy and not sociopathy, because empathy would be a personality trait I would think. \
          • Impulsivity - this carries over from ASPD, and was definitely part of my makeup, although where impulsivety turns from good to bad I am not sure. Good to be quick - I am, but I guess when one's impulses get carried away to the detriment of others, one has a problem. I did, and to some degree, still do, although in a changed way which I am not sure about yet.
        • Psychopathy
          • This is where the rubber hits the road I think. "... criminals and APDs tend to "age out" of crime; psychopaths do not, and are at high risk of recidivism." I guess this is where the rubber hits the road. it is my contention that had 'the event' happened, I would have continued on my 'merry' way and would be, one way or another, and not intentionally, ded by now. One could even say that that happened already, and it is only by way of fate that I am not, not having finished whatever it is that I am suppossed to do here, as hokey and 'spiritual' as that may be. Whaddo I know anyway?
    • Manic Depression,
    • Transsexuality
      • Homosexual Transsexuals
      • Autogynephilia
  • How do ASPD, sociopathy, and psychology apply to me? Or better yet, what components of these catagories do not apply to me?

Terminology, definitions, discussions.

Identity
  • Psychological catagories/caste system
    • The degree to which one is capable of 'psychological sophistication.' Psychological sophistication marks the degree to which one can maintain identity ability to move beyond conventional forms of identification and maintain one's sense of self. What is identity? What is consciousness? What is it that gives us our sense of self?
Normal
  • 'Normal' is a social, cultural construct, and as such, describes the wide, middle of the road swath of individuals who interact more or less positively within their respective communities. It is the set of individuals who fall outside this swath that are marked with special designations such as sociopath etc.
Personality Disorders
  • " ...personality disorders are defined by experiences and behaviors that differ from societal norms and expectations.  Those diagnosed with a personality disorder may experience difficulties in cognition, emotiveness, interpersonal functioning or control of impulses. " - Wikipedia,  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personality_disorder
Socio vs Psycho  - in here I dissect the two terms, and come up with a working definition.
  • Sociopaths are a product of environment, psychopaths a product of nature?
  • Psychopaths are criminal, sociopaths not so much?
  • Sociopaths are those not in harmony with their society. Psychopaths are, by definition, none existent, because without a society there is no 'norm, and in the cosmic game of evolution, anything goes.
The Making - This outlines the first nine years of my life leading to my disassociation, or splitting off.

The life of a psycho/socio/path - this describes, in detail, how I conform to the definitions set above

The Breaking - this describes the event, and the things that come on line as my psyche unfolds to my suicide

Self Actualization and Beyond - this describes the final steps, including PTSD, Flight Fight, Anger Management, RLE, and individuation/self actualization

Epilogue

Notes etc:
My formative years took place in a war zone. Several war zones actually. My parents took 6 years to finalize their incompatability, subjecting my sister and I to all manner of discord and strife. I became the problem, after they split up, and stood in for my mother as my fathers whipping post. Then, shipped off to live with our grandparents, I got to experience first hand what my father went thru at the hands of his father. Softened by time and age to be sure, but visceral enough by far. By the time my step mother entered the picture, I was a dissociated, angry, and disaffected youth with bipolar tendencies and extreme personality disorders. I was a sociopath by the time I was eleven: A pathalogical liar, a kleptomaniac, anger ridden, glib and likable enough, manipulative, dissociated and disaffected, I was a card carrying sociopath by the time I was eleven. My step-mother didn't stand a chance in my heart. That was locked down by my stunted and neglected need for my mother.

Gregarious by nature, anti-social by nurture, I was the kid you liked but avoided because you never knew which way I would turn, from agreeable and interesting to troublesome and unpredictable. Having no positive role models during these formative years, especially in the areas of empathy and love (my aunt Rosalie and Edna, one of my father's girlfriends, were the exceptions, our interactions all too brief); intelligent and gregarious enough; I matured into a classic example of a young sociopath, pleasant enough on the surface, but incapable of love and deeper emotional intelligence. In 1989, I experienced a life changing moment I call "The Event," when I re-associated internally with all that I had been disconected from. From this point on, I found myself unwittingly on the path of self actualization, hopping from this therapy to that theray, from self help groups to individual counselling, as I tried to untangle the spagetti like gordian knot that was my psyche.

Fortunately for me, I was into drugs. I say fortunately because I believe that it was partially because of my drug use that I was able

Antisocial personality disorders
  •  " Research suggests that, “psychopaths are a stable proportion of any population, can be from any segment of society, may constitute a distinct taxonomical class forged by freqncy-dependent natural selection, and that the muting of the social emotions is the proximate mechanism that enables psychopaths to pursue their self-centered goals without felling the pangs of guilt. Sociopaths are more the products of adverse environmental experiences that affect autonomic nervous system and neurological development that may lead to physiological responses similar to those of psychopaths. Antisocial personality disorder is a legal/clinical label that may be applied to both psychopaths and sociopaths” (Walsh & Wu, 2008).  In his book,Without Conscience, Robert Hare states that the difference between psychopathy and sociopathy ”reflects on the origins and determinates of each.”
    • The difference one of whom either type will offend against, the psychopath universal in approach to crime or anti-social behavior, while the sociopath has scruples towards friends and family members. I was universal in my anti social behaviors, in this case, subscribing to pathological.
    • Sociopathy
    • Psychopathy
  • Etiology (causation)
Personality
  • defined psychologically, is the set of enduring behavioral and mental traits that distinguish human beings (from one another).
    • behavioral traits
    • mental traits

Individuation and Self Actualization
  • Individuation
    • Differentiation

Empathy

  • nature or nurture. Apparently, one of the distinctions perhaps between sociopathy and psychopathy is that the latter is deemed genetic, or at least, physical in nature, whereas sociopathy is deemed an issue of nurture.
  • I connect the late development of my empathy to the experience I had when I first was able to look at the young child I had been and empathize with it as though I was someone else. I remember this clearly, in aug/sept of 2007. I was able to look at my past self like that little boy was someone else, and feel sorry for what he was going thru, much like I would do today if I were to see another child being treated the way I was.
  • Empathy is a facet of the human makeup. However, it is like reading, and writing, and talking. It has to be nurtured, and practiced in order for one to develop it into the tool that is can be.
Before and After, relative to socio and psychopathological profiles. This refers to 'The Event' in 1989, when I was 38, and how my behavior changed after I re-associated.
  • Before
    • Guilt. Especially with regard to theft and lying, and risky behaviour, I had no guilt or shame. Only in the matter of sex and cross dressing did these mechanisms have any traction
  • After

Path / Vocation

I use the term 'vocation' or path to mean something that one is 'called' to, much as it was a religious term, and somewhat deterministic philosophically. By this, however, I mean that when follows one's true path, one's life becomes effortless as long as one stays on that path. And the way to tell one is on one's path is to pursue that path that has the least resistance, whatever that means personally.

I consider myself to have stumbled upon the path that I am meant to be on. It takes the form of the work I am doing at Qmunity. I have been on several paths in my life, but these have not been paths so much as trails I have wandered thru as I stumbled my way in life.

This path is vocational. And one of the qualities of this path that tells me it is vocational is that everything I do on it, regardless of my manic depressive... state, seems to fall into place without the slightest effort on my part other than me complying with the opportunities that are presented to me as choices. All the other fields of endeavor I have pursued in my life have been, for the most part, strewn with strife, uncertainty and resistance.

For the most part, my time at Qmunity has been a necklace of positive events, marked by a personal enjoyment of the work I do there. I have written for Qmunity; attained a positive reputation there; have become somewhat of a face of Qmunity; have recently completed a year of facilitating a support/social group with Qmunity and am now embarking on starting a support/social trans group (24/7+), and have recently been named 'Volunteer of the Month' at Qmunity. All organically, with no effort other than the effort it takes to participate in something that one likes or loves doing. And it is by these qualities that I realize that I am doing the 'right' thing in my life. Gone are all the other  trails and byways that I was pursuing, paths that were uncertain and ate away at my self esteem. I am now on this path, whatever it it, guided by a blind trust in the process of following this path wherever it may lead.

Gone fishin'

Aug '12. This blog is mostly down for now, due to (manic) depression.

in response to: How are you

I'm still wallowing in the annual slew of my own despond, managing this year however to maintain a skeletal schedule at Qmunity, an LGBTQ resource center where I am a receptionist, keep the apartment reasonably clean (with help), feed the cat, eat too many carbos; and not much else, either way. Not very outgoing internally speaking, so lots of screen and bed time. It is, however, just possible that I am starting to come out of it, this email being one of the (I think) growing number of signs that I may be on the way up and out of the cloying depths of that odious slew which has been constant these last few months. Think of me as trudging thru a dark, sombre terrain, its medium molasses-like on my body, the daily strain and toil of navigating its depths sucking the very life out of me. Possibly, hopefully, having perhaps traversed the deepest, darkest and dankest part, the nadirs of my despondency and desolation, I am now lethargically and dejectedly slogging my way up the other side, the treacherous and uneven terrain beneath my leaden feet deceptively graduated with dips, hollows, and rises, allowing me to break the surface now and again for a brief glimpse of sunlight/hope/happiness before I find myself once more submerged beneath stagnant waves of doubt, despair and depression. Pressing loathsomely on, nauseated, leaning, or rather almost falling over into the thick morass of despair which surrounds me, I haul my dejected and tired ass once more forward towards the distant, sunlit shore of my 'manic' self. More or less.

Flowers for nanci blu

In the story "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, Charlie is a mentally challenged janitor who becomes part of an experiment, first championed by Algernon the lab mouse, to artificially augment his limited intelligence. The process is a success, at least at first, and Charlie becomes a genius as the drugs he is taking work their magic. As a result of this, Charlie himself goes on to take over the experiment, his mental acuity and capabilities now so much more than anyone around him. The story takes a turn as Charlie realizes, working thru the calculations and such as he works further on the experiment, that there is a flaw in the basic foundations of the experiment, and that according to his calculation, he will start to experience a decline in his newly acquired mentality, returning to his prior mentally challenged state. The story is told from the POV of Charlie, and we get to witness firsthand Charlie's remarkable ascent from simpleton to genius and in disturbing detail, his fall from that lofty state.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding the relative values of genius/simpleton and the mentally challenged, this is a rough parallel of what is happening to me, emotionally, and in some regards, cognitively. Happily, I have experienced a year and a half respite from the months long depression periods that I have been accustomed to experiencing yearly for over twenty years now and had thought that I had overcome my 'disability,' but it now seems, at this point, that that is not the case. Over the last couple of weeks I have begun to experience the behaviors and such that characterize and mark these periods of despond. Some of them are: a marked decline in my mental acuity, procrastination on all levels that require personal motivation, a general disregard or caring for appearance and cleanliness, an inability to get out of bed unless absolutely necessary, a general sense of dystopia, finding no satisfaction or joy in anything that I do, even to those things that I most cherish (music, writing, ice cream etc). Where I am usually optimistic and confident in my approach to life, during these times I find myself if not pessimistic, at least with no confidence in my abilities, even to the point of feeling embarrassed regarding my former state of confidence and optimisim and the conclusions I may have drawn at those times. Where before I was interested, interactive, and motivated, now there just ain't no 'wanna' anymore, and everything is a fight to escape an internal inertia that keeps me nailed to my bed. And even when I do do convince myself to get up and out, the rest of that time is spent actively waiting to get back to bed. An upshot of this is that I find myself committed to things that I am no longer able to do, really, other than cursorily.

This last is not satisfactory, with special regard to my feelings of competence and responsibility, and so, as I have done in the past, I am suspending all those activities that need more than surface level participation. To those this inconveniences, my apologies, but better this than me not showing up when expected, or showing up and not being able to perform to the level that is required.

See you on the upswing

With regret

The Reaction Zone 1

I post my third regimen of suppression of external expression, at least anger wise. I had an incident, wherein a fairly large button was pushed. I was able to suppress my external reaction, regarding appropriate behavior, and move into another scenario, the post of which I am still learning about.

So it seems to have taken me a couple of days to finally be free of the initial reaction. I did well, but how to minimize this. How to go with the flow, and not let my 'identifications' with whatever that is stored in my brain take over. This was different, in that it was low level active, staying in my system for a couple of days. It is gone now, I now no longer have the need to 'resolve' this. I just move on. Small footprint.

And I am hooking this into my go with the river thing, and watch for the opportunities. I am tuning in to the universe, or whatever, and it presents the opportunities. The ones I strive for are where I don't need to go. The smokes were an interesting one. Two smokes, enough for the pot, out of thin air. Handed to me. Just like that. And on I go. So i don't worry about the incident thing, i just keep on keepin' on, doing what i got to do and it will all unfold just right. Arggggh. It's easy to lose sight of this.

Addendum - seems that this incident is not over, and I have ended up deciding to force the issue. Why, because emotionally, it is eating me up. And this is a lesson learned re the rules of conflict avoidance thing I am learning at VAMP. I totally caved, accommodated as it were, as i thot I  could live with that, that that was the mature thing to do, and I have found that I can not. And I have suggested collaboration, or at least a working solution that includes me in my role as a stage manager.

Another malignant, bigoted, talking hed exposed: Kirk Cameron

Kirk Cameron Tells Piers Morgan Homosexuality Is 'Unnatural,' 'Ultimately Destructive'

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/03/kirk-cameron-piers-morgan-homosexuality-unnatural_n_1318430.html?ref=mostpopular

Well there you have it, another moral moron spews zer's* bigoted, hateful and prejudicial opinion around for anyone to hear. You'd think these people might have an inkling about how transparent and disingenuous they appear, using biblical talking points like they meant something to anyone that doesn't particularly believe in that unsubstantiated collection of opinions.

What's 'destructive' to society Mr Cameron is prejudical and ignorant (of empirically substantiated) attitudes such as yours that incite, divide and exclude. We need tolerance and understanding in society, not blind allegiance to out dated and fallacious ideologies that hinder people from forming a consensus based in some kind of mutual, systematically verifiable accord.

The open minded, are real Mr. Cameron, and are not going away. How can they? They are what they are, not what you think they're supposed to be. And as far as I can tell, anyone who has a 'moral' problem with some one else's lifestyle is either a fucking nazi, or a secret admirer of that lifestyle. So either come on out of your closet with your best frock on or drop your need to impose your beliefs on the rest of the world. Join the community of the open minded Mr. Cameron. You'll feel a lot better, and you won't be such a pain in the ass.

Wake up and smell the Armageddon. It's coming wether you like it or not, and your beliefs are no more valid with regard to that than anyone else's.

Kirk Cameron Responds To Criticism For Homosexual Remarks
"I should be able to express moral views on social issues, especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years -- without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach 'tolerance' that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square.

And there it is, just to reiterate. Your beliefs are based on the bible, which as I have said, is nothing more than a conglomeration of unverifiable and uninformed opinions. There a whole lot of other people out there who have their own beliefs, and yours are no more valid than theirs, or mine. That's why we have the idea of separation of church and state. Because beliefs are like assholes: everyone has one, and no one's is any more 'right' than any one elses. And just because you hold the bible in such great esteem doesn't make it the grand arbiter of morals that you think it does. Same as "especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years" thinking that just because something has been around for a long time makes it right. Beating women was, and still is for some, something that has been around for a long time too. Doesn't make it right. How about the earth is flat thing. Flown over the edge of the world lately? Grow up and quite trying to make the world in the bible's image. It ain't gonna float, and I'm just a little bit sick and tired of you guys, and you know who you are, telling everyone that everyone else who's not in your little club is ruining everything. And screw off with the "I should be able to express moral views" thing. Whiner.  You;re not expressing moral views, you're prosletyzing: that is, promoting a moral absolute pertaining to your own, narrow and bigoted beliefs. Fuck off and take some LSD, get a grip on reality for fuck's sake. Or just go away and practice your own beliefs and leave everyone else alone. That's what we're doing. Just because we don't try to shove our beliefs down your throat, doesn't mean we don't have any.

"that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards." No one is trying to do this. What the open minded are trying to do is give everyone a fair shake down the line. That means agreeing upon the things that we can agree upon, like drinking glasses, tables, Copernicus's assertions, or contraception. Everyone should have the same right to take it or not take it. And that means that everyone that operates under the same governmental umbrella plays by the same rules. You, or your boyfriend, oops, did I say boyfriend, silly me, don't have take contraception if you don't want to. Just don't hide behind your dogma to block others from exercising their right to self determination. We are, after all, all Gawd's children.

Separation of church and state

Work in Progress (March 10'12/nb)

Rick Santorum and the religious right: an analysis

So I heard Rick Santorum on Hardball the other night and zee said something that points out exactly what is disingenuous about his position vis a vis the separation of church and state. Zee has taken Kennedy's "I beleeve in an America (sic) where the separation of church and state is absolute...," interpreting it to mean that faith based people have no say. Not at all what the Catholic Kennedy had in mind. Santorum takes a statement which is about an equal playing field where all get to have their say, regardless of a leader's personal beliefs, and incorrectly twists it into a statement that put limits on people of faith. And that is patently just not true. For one, just because people do not believe in Rick Santorum's version of what happens when we all die doesn't mean they don't have faith. Everyone has some kind of faith. It's just not necessarily the same as any one else's. Santorum then continues; "Where people of faith are out of bounds." And this is where zee really turns the egregious screw, because it is here, as zee talks to his evangelical, Christian base, that zee makes it sound like the evangelical, christian faith is the faith that is being limited. Because as sure as I am that I am sitting here writing this, I am sure that the Rick Santorum is not talking to any of the other 'faithful' out there other than zers own. Because in zers eyes, as in many of the elitist, bigoted and prejudicial 'faiths' out there, zers is the only faith, because of course, everyone else is wrong, and need to be brought into his fold. And that is where he is ded wrong, and the separation of church and state is what saves us from the dark ages of religious intolerance. This is where no one's unverifiable and personally held 'religious' viewpoints are held up to be the arbiter of all without some sort of universally agreed upon vetting system, and that's where science, and it's empirical method of evaluation comes in. And that's the problem I have with Santorum, because he is an intelligent man, an educated man, and he should know better. And that poses a big question. Does zee know better, which makes zer no more than a rabble rouser and a dishonest man, or  does zee indeed actually not see this.As in, is incapable of seeing this. And what does that mean, personal development wise, for to not be able to see this point indicates, at least to me, an immature psyche. A hubot: one who is run by subconscious programs over which the conscious has no control. And I'd just as soon rather not have an incomplete or out of control person at the wheel of the greatest nuclear power on the planet.

There are beliefs we all share, and there are beliefs that we don't share. The ones we can share, we see and use every day. Soap, air travel, twinkies. These are what we can agree upon and regulate to the satisfaction of all. To the others, beliefs and such, these are personal domain, debatable, and of nobody's business but the owner. These we can not regulate. The Rick Santorums of the world don't want to acknowledge this. Why. Who knows. The point is, zee* has not a leg to stand on, other than the sheeple who know no other way in life but to follow. The problem arises when those who think their beliefs (i.e. things theoretical which they can not substantiate by anything more than faith and blind obedience to that faith), are more right than someone else's, and try to impose those beliefs on others. The contraception issue is one, and more on this. In order for it all to work, everyone has to have equal rights. That means that churches etc, have to be subject to the same rules as everyone else. I can't help feeling that Obama fucked up with his decision to let churches off the hook. It's absurd, and they do nobody any service when they behave this way. That they can't live and let live is, well, one of the conundrums of life I guess.

The Politix of Subterfuge

I think I'm getting the hang of this. Basically, I have been looking for a way to be able to see both sides of the political polarity, USA wise, and the recent fuss over contraception in the USA is a perfect example.

Rush Limbo, the republican rabble rouser, has fanned the flames with his incendiary and insulting rhetoric. Faced with basically a lose lose primary situation, facing an incumbent president who's fortunes are on a positive trajectory election wise, the republicans are looking for any issue that will muddy the waters, and make the election story about anything other than what is working for Obama. Enter red meat issues, like contraception, and religious 'rights' etc.

And where I am now learning to see, is how the democrats fall for it, time and time again, letting the republicans set the agenda with their incendiary, rabble rousing histrionics. Incredible. I can see both sides, as Lucy fakes holding the ball once more for Charlie Brown. And Obama has fallen for it too, making allowance for 'religious' scruple, giving churches an exemption on a 'right' that is for everyone. Let's see this cat out of the bag.

I Hubot

The goal of all organic life is to become completely and wholly whatever one is. A seedling becomes a sprout, a cub, a sapling, a heifer or whatever it is on its individual path to maturity, eventually becoming the actual cow or bull, or flower; regardless of the stage it was in, it always was at least the potentiality of its cowness, its flowerness. So it is too with homo sapiens, with one notable difference: Humans have the ability to subvert the natural process of actualization, with the aid of their programmable super computers.
  1. Everyone is on a path of actualization. In the organic way, a child becomes the teen, becomes the adult, and the elder. The brain, however, an infinite mchine of variation, can be programmed in a myriad of ways that may not
  2. Psycho/self actualization in humans is the process of becoming ?% conscious: that is, when one has freed oneself from the constraints of early programming, peer pressure, and basic needs.
  3. Hubots - human beings who are motivated by anything other than consciousness. Until one has individuated, or at least, differentiated, one may be subject to motivations the which of one has not conscious control. One is not actualized while one is subject to unconscious motivations.
  4. Self-transcendence - Viktor Frankl later added Self-transcendence
  5. Sexual Competition: Sexual selection, a concept introduced by Charles Darwin in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, is a significant element of his theory of natural selection. The sexual form of selection
... depends, not on a struggle for existence, but on a struggle between the males for possession of the females; the result is not death to the unsuccessful competitor, but few or no offspring.[1]
... when the males and females of any animal have the same general habits ... but differ in structure, colour, or ornament, such differences have been mainly caused by sexual selection.[2]
    1. Sexual Completion: my subjective opinion on this that in human men, the desire for orgasm is the driving force that keeps the human world going round. There may be a psychological or evolutionary drive here, but the simple act of having the male orgasm is the prime motivator. That some men are driven by a need to prove their potency is one thing; the orgasm is another beast entirely. The stronger the drive, the more children that may be produced.
  6. Maslow thinks some people are driven by 'being' needs as oppossed to others who are driven by 'deficiency' needs, i.e. food, water, sex etc.
    1. I think all people can be psychologically held back on their path of self actualization by overriding psychological forces, such as early programing which does not allow the psyche to develop into its natural state.
  7. Complexes fit in here somehow. The autonomous systems is a complex. It has an agenda: to keep the machine running in spite of anything that may threaten is extinction, short of the actual extinction.
  8. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs makes basic assumption of human nature, such as:
Notes
A review of Maslow's: Toward a Psychology of Being, starting with the first essay: Towards a Psychology of Health. Below is a list of Maslow's basic assumptions of human nature. I am, by way of validating my experiences, past and present with these assumptions, validating his hypothesis of self actualization.
Basic Assumptions (pgs 3-4)
  1. We have, each of us, an essential biology based inner nature, which is to some degree 'natural,' intrinsic, given, and in a certain limited sense, unchangeable, or, at least, unchanging. I think this has to do with Jung's perception, and mine, of libido. This is the life force that we all are, and that connects us to the universe. This is what I got in touch with when I took on RLE and especially, when I changed my name to nanci blu, this name embodying both the frisson I felt and feel when considering all things frilly, and the fear my precious biker/loner persona felt when confronted with the gay label. It is my belief that at this time, i came into touch with my libido, my inner self that is connected to the 'now.'
  2. Each person's inner naure is in  part unique to himself and in part species-wide. ala Jung again and parallel to the collective consciousness. Also, as unique to zee self, that is where I run up against this feminine identity attachment I feel is mine. Not that I feel I, or anyone else for that matter, is either feminine or masculine, but rather that we inhabit our sexual context, and that is, or has been, almost impossible for most to separate themselves from. That I identify with the feminine rather than the masculine doesn't make me so much female as it does make me sensitive, emotional, gentle, i,e, all those attributes that in my society are identified as femanine, but in another species, say a praying mantis, might be something else entirely.
  3. It is possible to study this inner nature scientifically and to discover what it is like (not invent, but discover). For me, this what has happened. I have been discovering all of this since 1989, and have recently come to the juncture of individuation and self actualization, as far as I can tell.  Most of what I read that connects to this is more of validation and vocabulary than it is of anything else.
  4. This inner nature, as much as we know of it so far, seems not to be intrinsically or primarily or necessarily evil. The basic needs (for life, for safety and security, for belongingness and affection, for respect and self-respect, and for self-actualization), the basic human emotions and the basic human capacities are on their face either neutral, pre-moral or positively 'good.' Destructiveness, sadism, cruelty, malice, etc., seem so far to be not intrinsic but rather they seem to be violent reactions against frustration of our intrinsic needs, emotions and capacities. Anger is in itself not evil, nor is fear, laziness, or even ingorance. Of course, these can and do lead to evil behaviour, but they needn't. (the thing i, and some others i assume, have difficulty with here is the sometimes difficulty in separating the behaviour from the individual. Also, I do find that whereas once I was self-destructive and isolated, I am now the opposite, and am indeed, kind, and good. I spent fifty years of my life reacting to the circumstances of my youth. This is, happily, no longer the case). This result is not intrinsically necessary. Human nature is not nearly as bad as it has been thought to be. In fact, it can be said that the possibilities of human nature have customarily been sold short. And not only cut short, but consciously maligned, as in the doctrine of original sin. This is a pernicious and self serving lie, set up by the sanctimonious to manipulate the masses, and possibly one of the greatest evils ever done in the world, considering how many people and how many negative and destructive situations it has ultimately been at the root of.
  5. Since this inner nature is good or neutral rather than bad, it is best to bring it out and to encourage it rather than to suppress it. If it is permitted to guide our life, we grow healthy, fruitful, and happy. Thus is the context of my life at this time, having finally emerged from the state of reactive unhappiness that was my lot post-alienation from my parents.
  6. If this essential core of hte person is denied or suppressed, one gets sick sometimes in obvious ways, sometimes in subtle ways, sometimes immediately, sometimes later. My way was manic depression.
  7. This inner nature, is not strong and overpowering and unmistakable like the instincts of animals. It is weak and delicate and subtle and easily overcome by habit, cultural pressure, and wrong attitudes towards it. I would amend to say that once one becomes aware of this inner nature, and connected to it, that there is no personal force stronger. Anyone not operating from this base of self is by definition weaker, having no solid foundation for what they present. Witness the Christ myth. He was conquered physically, but never could they have taken away from him what he was. That is an impossibility, as once one accepts what one is, there is no going back, and the world be damned.
  8. Even though weak, it rarely disappears in the normal person-perhaps not even in the sick person. Even though denied, it persists, underground forever pressing for actualization. I would say never. It is always there, for it is at least part of whatever it is that is the life force in all of us, flora and fauna alike.
  9. Somehow, these conclusions must all be articulated with the necessity of discipline, deprivation, frustration, pain, and tragedy. To the extent that these experiences reveal and foster and fulfil our inner nature, to that extent they are desirable experiences. It is increasingly clear that these experiences have something to do with a sense of achievement and ego strength and therefore with the sense of healthy self-esteem and self-confidence. The person who hasn't conquered, withstood and overcome continues to feel doubtful that he could. This is true not only for external dangers; it holds also for the ability to control and to delay one's own impulses, and therefore to be unafraid of them. Not really sure about this. For me, the change started to come when I gave it all up, and faced my own demise, real time. After that, after a long period of... gestation perhaps, I started to come around, with no prerequisites, and to a new sense of identity. I did, however, face a rather substantial fear down, twice as a matter of fact, and I do consider these integral to my actualization. I would also add to this Alice Miller's list of the basic rights of children, and to that I would add that given the basic assumptions above, in that no child is evil, that any treatment of children not consistent with the above leads to
  • One of the premises of this book is that it is easier to work towards a healthy psychological state, a personal growth model, instead of trying to undo a 'sick' one.We see this today in the move towards positive role and healthy educational models.
  • pg 7, p2 - "In essence, I am deliberately rejecting our present easy distinction between sickness and health, at least as far as surface symptoms are concerned. Does sickness mean having symptoms? I maintain now that sickness might consist of not having symptoms when you should. Does health mean being symptom-free? I deny it. Which of the Nazis at Auschwitz or Dachau were healthy? Those with stricken conscience or those with a nice, clear, happy conscience? Was it possible for a profoundly human person not to feel conflict, suffering, depression, rage, etc?" and... pg 8, p2 - Clearly what will be called personality problems depends on who is doing the calling. The slave owner? The dictator? The patriarchal father? The husband who wants his wife to remain a child? It seems quite clear that the personality problems may sometimes be found to be protests against the crushing of one's psychological bones, of one's true inner nature. What is sick then is not to protest while this crime is being committed. And I am sorry to report my impression that most people do not protest under such treatment. They take it and pay years later, in neurotic and psychosomatic symptoms of various kinds, or perhaps in some cases never being aware that they are sick, that they have missed true happiness, true fulfilment of promise, a rich emotional life, and a serene, fruitful old age, that they have never known how wonderful it is to be creative, to react aesthetically, to find life thrilling.   In my own  words, having symptoms of depression for instance is not illness: it is a symptom of another issue that needs to be resolved. Just as one would not prescribe pain killers to cure a broken leg, one should not prescribe anti depressants to 'cure' depression. This actually goes deeper as some would argue that one has to give the 'health consumer' medication to 'calm them down' or stabilize them. I would argue that even then, and perhaps more so, we need deal with them on their own terms, not ours. Medicating them just buries the issue deeper and deeper. The argument is specious, based on 'practicalities' and such, staffing issues and such, and not on the best interests of the health seeker. Which points to another issue: jobs. Not enough of them. And why do we not have jobs for people to do these things, instead of trying to patch people up so that they can join the lists of the unemployed? And so, who is sick here, the one with the presenting symptoms, or those who prop up a sick and destructive status quo?

Review: "Dangerous Methods." Jung and Freudians alike, beware

"Dangerous Methods," a film by David Cronenberg, is at heart a boy meets girl flic with a not so dry wit, the Freud/Jung/ian in-jokes not so in as off. The on film relationship between Jung and Sabrina Spielrein (a patient of Jung's in the early days of his career) is an unsubstantiated S&M fantasy compliments of Mr. C. et al. Spurious and superficial, there is no discernible attempt to show how this relationship may have informed Jung's growing ascendancy as one of the world's foremost trailblazers in the fields of psychology and, some might argue, spirituality; or indeed, the connection between the two.

Nor do we really get any insight into the relationship between the two principals, Jung and Freud, the boy 'beats' girl motif the main focus in a forest of plodding narrative and trivial detail. The auters of this piece are obviously not too familiar with their subject, and in their ignorance, do the field of psychology great disservice. Unfortunately, the principal actors too get caught in this pseudo psychological farce, turning in earnest but ultimately superficial performances of what should be fascinating exposes of two brilliant but obviously disturbed minds. Now there's a good title for what this piece could have been.

Those with a vested interest in broadening their knowledge of either Jung or Freud need not bother adding this piece to their portfolios. Dangerous methods indeed, Mr. Cronenberg, and applicable more precisely to the methods used to produce this piece. For those with serious interest in the subject, try Deirdre Bair's, "Jung*:" a captivating and in depth biography navigating the jungles of time and partisan politics with intelligence and impartiality. Taking the Mysticism out of Meditation

Once one gets past all the 'sacred' and 'divine,' and such, the ideological speculation about meditation, it's pretty simple to comprehend. Mediation is a way to still, and to discipline one's mind. After all, Gawd is everything, or nothing, so no need to bring that into the equation yet. Let's just stick to more empirical matters at hand for the moment.

The mind has a mind of it's own so to speak. It's gonna do what it's gonna do with or without that part of one self we think of as I and me (the ego complex, for want of a better term). It does that because that's the way it is built. The mind is a thinking, doing machine. Witness the autonomous system, taking care of a complex system of things the want of which would have us in our graves. The trouble is, the mind can get out of control, like a horse that has taken off with out the rider's consent. Constant worry, going over and over the same old things, personal criticisms that one repeats to oneself all the time, and perhaps a host of other more psycho/pathological disorders such as schizophrenia and personality disorder, are iterations of what the mind can do when one doesn't have a proper grasp on the reins. Mediation, simply put, is the exercise one does with one's mind to bring it under conscious control. The more esoteric and mystical interpretations are subjective, and personal. I happen to think that mediation is a way to hook into the universe, but that's another story, my story, and not germaine to the issue at hand.*

So, the idea is, practice stilling one's mind, and then, when one wants to, let it go in the directions that one wants it to go, at the pace and intensity one requires of it, the rider of that horse now in complete control of the reins, putting the mind thru its paces like that horse at an equestrian event**. Anyway, that's my view of the thing, and I'm going with it. It seems to work.

*As i venture farther into... myself, I guess, meditation wise, I also seem to be going further out into the universe surroundings. First, as I look into myself, quieting my mind as I do a conscious check thru my body, relaxing any muscles that may be contracted, I let the thoughts that arise pass thru my consciousness like clouds on a sunny day. Sometimes I find myself hooking onto those thoughts, starting to gnaw at them, coming up with solutions and action plans. As I become aware of that, I then let that thought go. More thoughts come, but as I let them pass, they start to diminish in number. Then I start to become aware of my surroundings, the noises closest to me, like the sound of my own eardrums, the computer fan, the fridge, cars on the street below, the railway crossing bell clanging a third of a mile away or so, seagulls near and farther away somewhere out towards the bay, a ship's fog horn out on the water, a seaplane taking off or landing. I am now miles away in a sense, and with a sense now of being on this big ball that is careening thru space and time, as I sit on its hide and imagine outer space and what I may be seeing there as the experience of now engulfs me in its immensity and I become aware of my feelings as I... merge with everything.... This is as far as I have ventured so far, and I am wondering how much further I am going to go this way, what other energies that are washing over me am I going to be able to sense, feel, as my mind, and my heart expands this way? Actually, this just got really heavy, in a deep way, and I have just made another discovery here. Not sure what it is yet, something about peace of mind I think.

**At equestrian events, the horses are put thru a series of actions that are isolated exercises of what a horse does naturally, but now at will, the rider's will. I wonder what the parallel of those exercises are for the mind. Math? Poetry? Visualization?

When liberal ain't so Liberal.

I take it as a mark of distinction. It seems I have aggravated some policy or perhaps some one, and am no longer welcome on the Huffington Post Comments section. Me, a one time "Pick of the Litter" winner. Go figure. Today I went to my Huffpo account and found all my comments gone. No explanation, just gone.Typical actually. And I hope you can appreciate the irony. At the same time as Huffington Post would be up in arms given any restrictions on it's Ist Amendment Rights, it reserves the right to refuse post privileges on its site for any reason it wants. Of course, that too is its right: but the irony remains.

It started a couple of weeks ago when I made a response to an article regarding the use of the word tranny. The article was an apology from someone who thought they were being bad using this word. I took exception, making the point that tranny is not like nigger, as in, a word created to be derogatory and demeaning. Tranny is a contraction of transsexual, or even transvestite, the operative syllable being trans. Any derogation has to be in the mind of the perp, or the recipient, as transsexual is only a descriptive of what I, at least, am, and in that regard, one may as well use my name to hurl egregious epithets at me as use the contraction tranny. I pointed out that as a tranny myself, I think 1. that I have a personal stake in this discussion, and 2. that we, as in my community of trannies and our desire to be recognized and respected, don't need to be giving the opposition any more ammunition than it already has. In my opinion, objecting to someone calling someone tranny is picayune, a straw dog, and a waste of everybody's time.

Long story short, my piece got 'monitored.' Why? Who the fuck knows. I didn't swear, even asterisked nigger, as in n!#$%r, and although I was loath to sanitize a historical reference, I really do make efforts to please the citizen monitors (or robot monitors, whatever). And that's where it gets interesting. Days later, Ru Paul posts an article, and basically makes the same points as me, with a few of zer* own thrown in. My points: that got yanked. So I wrote a response to Ru Paul's, and I include in it a note to Huffpo telling them that I take care in my responses not to transgress, and could they please just leave my comments the f!#k alone, thank you very much, or something to that effect. And then I say, to myself that is, to hell with it, I'm just not going to post anymore, 'cause it's a waste of time, and this is where I point out that this is not sour grapes, or maybe not 'just,' because it really is a waste of time, my time, when for no perceived reason at all, and certainly non indicated, one's efforts get yanked for some arcane, who knows what the fuck bullshit PC or otherwise consideration.

But I still like going to Huffpo. It's a good rag so to speak. I don't have anything against the content, just the way I'm being treated. So I do stop posting, biting my tongue as it were. But, later, there is an article by Ricky Gervais, who is starting to become somewhat of a roll model to me, and I end up posting anyway, because I really like the perspective he propagates, and who knows, maybe starting a dialogue. You never know. And I include a comment about how he, Mr Gervais that is, is making me break my commitment to not post because, well, he's saying good shit that's worth a response. I know he sits in his mansion somewhere, hunched over his monitor as he sifts thru the posts, looking for some kind of validation for all that money he's making. So maybe he'll like the comment and want to respond. But that gets yanked. And that's when I notice my comments are all gone. Checked again today. Still gone. So I'm guessing that I am now on some list. Again, a mark of distinction.

And that's when I see the silver lining, and finally started doing this. That is, I am starting to use my blog as a comments section, and not just with regard to news articles, but whatever that is going on out there, and see where that goes. 'Cause the actual commentary part is a good thing, I am getting good at it, or at least, quick and efficient, and to the point, and I want to keep up that practice. Cause  I can write, and what I got to say is relevant, and not to be quelled or deleted because of some Kafkaesque quirk in an otherwise pretty good institution.

And here's where I think Huffpo screws up. By screening the posts at all, they take away so much of the discourse that might otherwise happen were they not so 'liberal' with their screening efforts. For it is not just I who is so callously disregarded. We are a select bunch. Selected anyway. So, Huffpo monitors, go fuck yourselves and waste someone else's time. You won't be wasting mine anymore. I got my own site, and I and anybody can say what the fuck they please on it.

Progress Report # 3. State of Being: nanci blu

Work in Progress
Following on Progress Report # 2, where I find myself in the middle of the "life is a river" metaphor.

The way I'm seeing it at the moment, life that is, is that one's life can be split up into basically four major areas  or levels. These are: 1. The Personal Level, 2. The Pyschological level, 3. The Spiritual Level, and 4. The Professional Level. Using these as my guideline, here is what is happening with me as I move into the 'actualized' segment of my life. For those of you who don't know, I have lived a 'non' life for the last fifty years, coming out of that last year around this time, and starting to learn how to live life all over again with a now full compliment of 'normal,' psycho/emotional tools.
  1. The Personal Level
    1. Finances, shelter, food, physical health, that kind of stuff. In general, that is all taken care of at the moment, in various stages that is.
      1. Finances, food, shelter etc is compliments of our social welfare system, I on disability. am working towards removing myself from this. It's getting close I think.
      2. SRS - am thru the psychological assessment, and am now waiting on the bureaucracy to catch up so that I can make an appointment for surgery. I still want to go thru with this, feel that it will complete me, even if I never get to employ my new body parts in anything other than urination and masturbation.
    2. Relationhips -  I have come to the conclusion that this is going to take care of itself as long as I don't let my psychology cloud my perceptions. The last two or three relationships have engaged in, have been with people that are not in my fields of interest, and were happening based on needs rather than mutual likes and goals. One don't go out with the guy/girl because zir* has a cunt/dick. One incorporates the cunt/dick that comes (npi) with the person you are attaching to. And a good plan of attack is to let that happen in and around where one lives/works and plays. Mutual Needs are co-dependent: Mutual Goals is inter-dependent. Although it occurs to me that one could go wrongly either way with those two too. However, a good plan of attack it seems to me is: Do what you like to do, and the relationships will follow in and around those endeavours with people who more or less are playing in the same ballpark. Does this mean one goes around fucking those with whom one works. Not really. As in anything really, discretion is the better part of valour.
  2. The Psychological Level
    1. Equilibrium - I now have, for the first time in my life, as memory serves, a personal 'normal.' That is to say, a stable, reflective and objective place that I can return to (and more and more quickly as I learn) when things have spun out of control in spite of or even against my conscious, actualized will: Equilibrium. I now know what it is, and how to maintain it. Phwew!
    2. Issues - I've had a few. Been working on those the last 20 odd years, and believe I have come to a significant milestone: Acutalization
  3. The "Spiritual" Level
    1. I have discovered this 'equilibrium' to be a state that can be induced, to a degree, by meditating. I am working diligently every day to become more and more capable in this regard. Meditation, as I got to lean it, was a drag, full of long periods of waiting for it to be over. That has changed, and is, to my new way of thinking, a way to consciously connect to the... universe I guess, to hook up to the mother ship, and to, along with creating a sense of equilipbrium...download perhaps. I find that this is adding something to me that I have never experienced before. I also noticed the other day as I 'hooked up,' that when a solitary ship horn sounded way over in the bay, I actually felt the sound as an impact on my body, thru my skin. Actually felt this, somatically, indicating to me a degree of somatic sensitivity I have never noticed before. Actually, I had noticed that when watching someone fall from a hight on tv, or in a movie, I would often 'feel' that too. Unique as far as I can tell. I would hear a similar horn a couple of days later from the same spot, and notice that I felt no somatic impact this time, as though my senses were duller somehow. I had also not meditated, or 'tuned in,' that day either. Connected? We'll see. Still working on this. What this has to do with "Spiritual" level i am not sure yet other than I think it's in that ballpark. Not big on the sacred stuff. As far as I can tell, we are all part of the universe, all one with it, and therefore, all 'sacred,' if anything is sacred. All the rest of it cowtows to hierarchy and superstition.
  1. The Social Level/Community
    1. It occurs to me that this is taking care of itself  to as I develop in my fields of endever. I am stopping worrying, or even looking, around this. It's happening. As I progress in these endevers, I meet and form new relationships with people who are interested in what I am interested in. Out of that, who knows? But it really does seem the way to go. Random factors, of course, will always play a part, but that's another story**.
  1. The Professional Level
    1. Performance Arts:
      1. Singing -
        1. Lessons with Craig Tompkins. Finding out what my voice can do. We are 'peeling back' the onion on this, and I am being blown away. I love what's happening with my voice. Today, Sunday Feb 5, I can feel my stomach muscles taking over the breathing, and my wind coming from down there. It is altering the quality of my sound I think, and much for the better.
        2. Choir with Solidarity Notes
        3. Performing - at a small restaurant, El Barrio on Hastings a block and a half west of Nanaimo, every Friday night with Caroline Stewart, as her lead guitarist, and doing my solo stuff. This is 'pahing my dues' and is moving along well as my voice adjusts and I learn from singing in front of people. I have no fear here anymore. 'Tis a wonderful thing.
      2. Acting - Thought I was giving it up, but have been asked to do Mrs.Warren's Profession. Have found that I am enjoying the work I am doing, so we shall see. It may not even happen.
    2. Social Work - I have found, thru volunteering at Qmunity, an LGBT resource center, that I like what I am doing there, that this is what I want to do when I grow up. I am good at it, and am  going to continue on to this end, if only to stayed tied into life on a different level than performing, although it occurs to me that they are, in some significant regard, very similar. Or perhaps it is that it is I what is the one and same, employing similar methods to different ends.
      1. Qmunity: I shall endever to stay in touch with this organization in what ever way I can. I  am at home here.
      2. VAMP - taking a five week volunteer training course with this addict recovery organization. Very good, and love the instructor, Oona.
      1. Peer to Peer training: am re-applying, this time with a different focus. Before, it was to get a job. This time, it is to venture farther afield in this field. I could counsel if nothing else.

Add to this that I now have some semblance of order, or maybe focus is a better word, about who I am and what I am doing. There is of course, the "sex change", but that's more like body sculpting. Quoting "Killing Floor" by yours truly, "I bin him, and I bin her, and now I'm some'thing more," reflects a deep need in me to fully incorporate and express the feminine side of my psyche so that I am perceived by all as being more in the female world than in the male world. I learn more and more each day about how and what this truly means to me, emotionally and psychologically. This sort of feels like it's a finding one's personal style kind of thing, only body wise rather than clothes wise.

* gender anonymous pronouns: he she zee it; him her zer; his hers zers. I think this covers all the bases. Let me know if it doesn't work somewhere, grammatically that is.

** here's the thing. If one meets someone who is sympatico, emotionally I guess, although we are usually talking about sexually at this point, then one may be well tempted or whatever, to suit one's persona to match the situation, instead of letting the situation suit one's persona. Something like that.

Transference

"Transference is a phenomenon in psychoanalysis characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another. One definition of transference is "the inappropriate repetition in the present of a relationship that was important in a person's childhood."[1] Another definition is "the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object."[2]Still another definition is "a reproduction of emotions relating to repressed experiences, especially of childhood, and the substitution of another person ... for the original object of the repressed impulses."[3]" Wikipedia

There is also the idea out there that there is no way out of this, that once imprinted with these early templates, we are doomed to rehash, over and over again, iterations on these templates, regardless of outcome. And in some cases, the more 'successful' scenarios perhaps, this may be, at least on the surface, and for those who don't mind living there, a good thing, providing everything goes according to script. How idyllic for those in this regard. Something along the lines of "ignorance is bliss." For those not so fortunate to have such 'positive' upbringings, or to be blessed with more complex and unintelligible pasts, this may not be such a good thing. And for these latter, under the rubric of "the silver lining thing" there may be some consolation in realizing that because one may be forced to examine one's psychological entrails due to the negative outcomes one is experiencing as a result of one's developmental years, one may be able to actually realize one's own potential, and come to know one's own true self, instead of living a life of superficial and deceptive ease under the aegis of someone else's delusions.

I am of two minds in this, and not necessarily ambivalent. I believe this imprinting thing to be true. For better and for worse. But I also think that it is possible to separate from these pasts, to differentiate from them, and to begin to work in other ways, to live one's life in other ways, as tricky, sticky and otherwise that this may be. And it is to this end that Jung's Individuation is focused. And I believe that at this time in my life and my stage of psychological analysis, that I am actually in touch with, in a visceral and emotionally tangible way, the birth to six year old emotions and programs and such that were evoked in me when I was of that age. I am having my psychological cake and eating it too. I am presently, differentiating from these past emotions and motivations and am learning to distinguish these past chimera from my present day scenarios. In my case, at the bottom of it all (circumcision a wild card not yet fully appreciated) is an intense longing for my mother, from whom I was harshly and indelicately separated when I was five or so years old. And it is very probable that I was emotionally detached from her, and most definitely from my father, beginning at birth, my father a psychologically crippled man, and my mother preoccupied with other things, and not predisposed to love a son, sexually abused as she purportedly was. And I believe that in the last few months I have been witness to some of the more specific emotions extant to my developmental years with my mother in particular.  At this very time, I am being hyper vigilante as to just what I am doing in any given relationship. I recently 'broke up' with a woman I have been 'seeing.' The relationship was supposed to be platonic, 'girlfriends,' and consciously, that was what I was looking for. But not so subconsciously, I was developing a overwhelming need to be with her, to be held and cuddled by her, asexually, regardless of the adult circumstance of our relationship. I had to sever the relationship, for there was no leaving it as it was. For as this feeling developed in me, the scenarios were starting to become unmanageable as I became more and more needy, and less able to represent myself, as the other person failed to act in the predetermined ways that my projections required. I could not stop them and was developing an emotional attachment far beyond our three month relationship. I believe I was acting out part of my past with my mother, and this person had been duped into playing the part. Not her fault, no matter how much she may or may not have resembled my mother, physically or otherwise.

This has also played out in my having intense feelings of loneliness of late.I attribute this to my getting in touch with this past me that was so emotionally deprived as a child. I am now feeling the feelings that I had shut myself off from so long ago. For years, disassociated as I was from my hurt feelings, I never felt lonely, and often wondered about people who expressed that condition. I now know this feeling anew, and it is a little overwhelming as I take on not only my adult feelings in this regard, but the feelings that I was having when I was a child.

Another relevance here is that I think I may have been attracted to this person for specific physical reasons, although one must be careful here. Physical resemblance can, or not, depending on what one is triggering on, be relevant. In this  case, breasts were involved, and I don't mean sexually. Breast have played a large role in my psychological makeup, and I believe this (or 'them' as them as the case may be) was the trigger to my one sided emotional dependency. Does this mean that co-dependency is actually a two way transference thing?

Is this really happening, or am I delusional and over analyzing things? I know some people will think the latter. I do know that I have recently, due to my psychological perambulations, been able to change a lot of outcomes that once would have ensnared me and yet now seem so predictable, and I do believe, at this late stage of the game, that my  life is changing, appreciably, for the better. Is it because of all this psycho stuff I am engaged in, or just because I am older, and mellowing. This last is a  laff actually. I may be mellowing in some ways, but something is there that has always been there, and it is stronger now, more powerful now, and somehow, as it and I become one, it is making my life better. I don't really feel like I am slowing down at all, but rather, picking up momentum.

And am I singular in this, with this intense longing to be loved? Of course not. On the other hand, I think I am starting to get a handle on just who it is I am relating to at any given time, and it is my hope that I will be able to develop a relationship with a real person, and not some chimera from my past, layered over and on unsuspecting innocents who get caught in my childhood history.

There is a certain type of relationship I have had several times over, and with it comes a certain 'nimbus' effect. I am not sure what this is. How it manifests is that I enter into an intense relationship with someone that predictably is going to last a few months, and then will fade out. It used to be sexually, but now that I have taken that out of the equation, I see that this has happened at least two times in the last year and a half. These relationships are such that it seems like we have known each other forever, and everything is very 'easy.' The honeymoon period. I just didn't know it might happen without sex. This seems to be a problem, for none of these relationships has come to anything other than sorrow, or at the very least, complete separation. Not a happy conclusion, at least, on the surface. I think these may be manifestations of transference.

A Note to Stephen Harper and His Ilk

Canada Gay Marriage Limbo: Prime Minister Stephen Harper Has No Intention Of Reopening National Debate Despite Report

It is amazing to me that there is this fight about the gay thing. Here I am, after years of being an unproductive, estranged, outwardly masculine, and a times 'criminal' element in my society, becoming a happy, well adjusted, productive member of that society. And I am accomplishing this by working thru my issues with the help of our social system which has at its roots consideration for the welfare of its members. And I have found that this gender/sex/orientation 'anomalie' I have been afraid of all my life is actually, much to my growing delight, an integral part of who I am, and integral to this new found and welcome social inclusiveness and productivity which has pervaded my soul. And yet, just as I am learning who I am becoming, and reaching out to my community to participate and contribute in some meaningful way, validating my very existence in ways productive and profound even, I am confronted daily by this bogus issue, this straw dog that is the gay/same sex marriage acceptance/denial thing. Please understand, from my point of view it all seems so trivial. I mean, here I am, rehabilitating my life, for the betterment of all, and yet, it seems that a certain segment of society on the flip side of this issue would rather see me and others like me the way I was, 'conventionally' disoriented, estranged and criminal rather than psychologically well adjusted, happy, and productive, in ways not only beneficial to myself but to society at large. And I have to wonder, what's the fucking use. Is there no winning with these people? It boggles the mind.

The article linked above outlines Stephen Harper's apparent decision to sweep under the carpet the same sex marriage/external country of origin issue that has cropped up in the courts. What's the problem Mr. Harper? Got yer knickers in a twist concerning your own sexuality? If this law is broken, just fix it. Don't fuck around with other people's lives just because you don't like their lifestyle. Take some time out and do some therapy, find out who you really are and let the rest of us live our lives the way we need to, never mind the way we want to. Or is that you too would rather that I and others like me are not peaceably and constructively rehabilitated, but rather remain the fucked up, disoriented, anti-social misfits that we once were, in order that we may be condemned as the criminals you are looking for so that you can fill the new jails that you are building for what the fuck who knows what the hell why for? Is that how we should 'fit in' to your world Stephen: in jail?

Evil is a state of mind. Bigotry is a state of mind: and evil, pure and simple. And by taking a reactive stance to this issue, Stephen Harper once again gives away his allegiance to his real gods.

Amber: In loving memory of

Just as leaves
 are the tree, The leaves
that help it grow, The tree remains, all in all,
As leaves they come and go. // What is the tree is all the tree,
The roots, the trunk, the leavesWhy mourn the loss of leaves and such,
when all that is still breathes: when all that is is nourished, in sunshine and in rain,
by the bounties of the endless skies, in time and time again. // We are the leaves on the tree,
we help the tree to grow. The tree remains, all in all, as leaves we come and go.
We are the tree on which the leaves
help the tree to grow.
And we remain,
all in all
as leaves
we come
and go
