Amber: In loving memory of

Just as leaves
 are the tree, The leaves
that help it grow, The tree remains, all in all,
As leaves they come and go. // What is the tree is all the tree,
The roots, the trunk, the leaves. Why mourn the loss of leaves and such,
when all that is still breathes: when all that is is nourished, in sunshine and in rain,
by the bounties of the endless skies, in time and time again. // We are the leaves on the tree,
we help the tree to grow. The tree remains, all in all, as leaves we come and go.
We are the tree on which the leaves
help the tree to grow.
And we remain,
all in all
as leaves,
we come
and go

The Ride of A Lifetime.

or, "The River of Life"

Aug 2011 - the rest of my life.
(latest edit - Dec 26th)

This is about how I found myself, metaphorically, in the relative calm of the middle of a large river after having emerged from what feels like a huge set of rapids lasting about 59 years. The metaphor gets a tad muddled when I consider that it is entirely possible that I wasn't really in rapids at all, but was just so conditioned to dealing with rapids from a very early age that I just kept on imagining and reacting to rapids where indeed there really were none. I remember the first time I got an inkling of this when I found myself in a situation that by all rights should have had me as the injured party, but somehow during the situation, found myself cast as the problem. Be that as it may, the point is that for the first time in my life, I am experiencing a calm with in myself that I can not remember ever experiencing, and that calm is translating into a whole different set of circumstances that I could never have imagined during the time when I felt myself to be rapid bound.

It all came to a hed in August of 2011, when I was visiting my father and steiffmutter, ostensibly to visit with my father and his therapist. During this visit, which I later termed our 'ten day (therapy) intensive,' subsequent to a rather meaningful catharsis, I became aware that I had choices regarding how to deal with our respective situations. I felt that if I closed my eyes, once again, metaphorically, and carefully proceeded, as though in the dark, 'feeling' my way as it were, I would wind up making better choices than if my eyes were open and the lights on. And I realized that I didn't need to concern myself with the family anymore. My life was now going somewhere else, and I could move on, leaving the whole mess more or less behind. Instead of getting hung up on the old family dynamics, which of course, had been a major part of my life at one point, I could just move on, as my family members and their dysfunctions really didn't concern me at all anymore, I was out of that emotional morass for once and for all, should I decide that was what I wanted. That was the first glimpse of the river for me. An epiphany I guess.

And move on I did, with me still metaphorically dipping in and out of the rapids. But I was really starting to get the picture that these rapids were indeed more self induced than real, or at least that when I did confront a real life rapid, I was somehow making more of it than was necessary. Then one day, at a holiday celebration, I experienced another rapid. Was it real, or was it me? Whatever, I got caught in it once again, reacting emotionally to the situation, and finding myself once more in troubled waters. Only this time, it wasn't long, a day at most, before I had calmed down and realized that I was over it somehow. "That it was sort of similar to the family thing, and I could get hung up on it, or just leave it behind. And that's when it hit me. Just let it all go. I told a friend that day that it was time for me to let go of the reins. That afternoon I pulled a tarot card. Oh yea, I had started up with tarot in September, after I returned from the ten day intensive with the pater and steiffmutter. Just as a point of interest really, but also because I felt that I had somehow slipped into the 'ether' of cosmic consideration, and needed something on that level to work with. Something to cogitate upon. On the one hand, for me, tarot is full of symbology that does relate to our human condition, and I see no  harm in meditating on the symbols I find there. Nothing really esoteric about it. However, there is the idea, a la  my poem, The Tree, that we are indeed all stardust, and not just stardust, but whatever stardust is made of. Energy? Consciousness? Something fundamental of the universe(s)? Are we are all indeed this stardust, and hence the energy that the stardust is comprised of, and that energy is somehow akin to, if not indeed, consciousnesses, and that all is all. Could it actually be that we are the emerging consciousness of the universe? That we, along with all the animals and other sentient beings in the world at least, are gawd, literally, and in the early developmental stages of a universal being? And the tarot, not just a bunch of cardboard cutouts with pretty pictures on them, but also part of the stardust/energy/consciousness matrix, and hence, relevant on some sort of  touchy feely, grope around in the dark kind of way. Who knows? I pulled a card.

It couldn't have been more synchronistic, more twighlight zone, more cosmic. A nod from the universe. I pulled the 'Hanged Man.' If this was coincidence, well, then how do we rate coincidences? Is there a scale? Or are all coincidences of the same magnitude, and hence, irrelevant? Many think so. From a subjective point of view however, it was kinda spooky. The Hanged Man is the card of letting go, 'of the reins,' as it were, and I couldn't have pulled a more on point card at that moment. A card of... faith basically. Not my strong suite, me usually of empirical bent, but considering my decision to 'let go of the reins,' now a major consideration. The point was that if I was in any doubt regarding my realization and decision to 'let go of the reins,' I was no longer in any such doubt. My course was clear, if I could just manage to shut my eyes and open my mind.

The next wrinkle in this little journey I seem to have begun was shortly thereafter when I realized that I felt this inner peace thing that I had not ever remembered experiencing before. (The closest I ever came to this was when I was stoned on coke and had reached that point in my pseudo transition from man to woman as to feel like I was... home somehow). The river metaphor applies here. This was when I realized that I felt  like I had just cleared this long series or rapids and had found myself  the middle of a very large, smoothly flowing river, and that all, including, and especially myself, was very calm. This was different than what I was used to. Very nice, together, collected, and I realized that I would like this to be my default position. This was a home base to hang on to. From this vantage I felt as if I could go anywhere I wanted, anytime, at a moment's notice, and with some experience, return to at any given moment, no matter the upset, the rapids real or imagined. I could then rest up, get my bearings, and, at my choosing, if  necessary, hed into whatever was in front of me, ready, equipped and able to face any situation.

And then last night I was at a neighbourhood pub with a friend. And I didn`t take my guitar, even though I knew it was an open mic night. Didn't know what I was going to do. Put my name on the list? I didn't feel like it really, but as was my usual bent, I was almost compelled to do so. The whole list thing that is. And every once in a while I would look in the host's direction to see if he was available to tell him i'd like to play maybe, but he was always busy. A sign? Then, he was sort of free, just casually talking to someone, so I went over, to say what the hell maybe. And he was talking, but still looking outwards, and I stood there waiting for him to either finish his casual conversation or take a moment to acknowledge me. And without saying anything, he turned away from me and into the person he was talking to. Not necessarily away from me so much, not in a pointed way, just more or less focused on the conversation at hand. However, even the person listening to the host had acknowledged my presence. But my target didn't even seem to notice I was there. Not that I felt it was anything personal. It was just as though a door had been closed, and so, I just walked away without a word. I wondered later if he would get out of that conversation and come over to me or something, but he didn't, and I left it there. The universe was not saying move ahead  with this, and for once, I was listening to the universe. At least, that's what I'm telling myself.

And this is what I mean about letting go of control and just letting myself go where the river is taking me. I'm now here for the ride. What else is there really? And I want to see if I just let go of all the stuff I think is important, and just watch what is happening without feeling that I have to accomplish this or do that, that I can just more or less let happen what is going to happen. If nothing else, it is intriguing. And it really can't be any worse than what has already happened. Does this mean I quit everything in my life that was hooked up prior to all of this river metaphor stuff? Maybe. Not really sure yet. Seems that some of the stuff is solid, like SRS, like Qmunity, maybe even el Barrio where I now play lead guitar and do some solo stuff. Not really sure yet. What I do know is that I am now watching as closely as I can, and doing my best to not let the hed cheeze get in the way. And I'm clearing that up as fast as I can. Time to stop thrashing about and see what's going on behind door 3.

State of the Art: Depressive Illnesses [(Manic) Depression] - a mental health seeker's perspective)

Further elucidation in the case of nanci blu, receptionist extraordinaire (last update Dec 28'11).

Thesis: If depression, and related conditions, i.e. anxiety disorders/manic-depression etc, are caused by emotional repression, then anti-depression medications, especially those that go to affecting mood (i.e.depression), are not only useless, but counter-productive to the release of emotions and such that are at the root of  depression. Today's Hoxey Elixirs.

The Dilemma: There is a predicament that faces all of us mental health seekers these days, with regard especially to those who experience depressive illnesses, and manic-depression in my particular. Much like the seemingly endless task of finding the right therapist, we are also faced, in the midst of our respective crises, with the daunting challenge of choosing which therapy will be effective. And given the plethora of choices, from cognitive to gestalt to IPT to analytical psychology to psychotherapy to shhhECThhh to a legion of pharmaceuticals ... well, you get the picture: one is hard pressed to make an informed decision. And in a lot of cases I suspect, one's decision is made by one's doctor, by default, because, well, they are the experts, and we tend to trust our experts, and go along with them. Why should we not?

The Scientific Method and the Common Man: Of course, doctors and the like are just people too, faced with much the same problems as the rest of us. And there is so much information out there, so many avenues to pursue, so little time, so much that seems promising but is not necessarily anything that any one is 100% certain about, that even the experts can fall behind the times. We are, after all, all part of the grand experiment, regardless of which side of the maze we think we're on. And in some cases, some professionals may feel they have to know, even when they don't really know, because they are supposed to know, because they have the degrees and certifications to prove they know, and because they are expected to know. Given this, some may make judgements and recommendations not because they do know, but because they feel they should know, and because, well, that's their job. But how does one know anything when one cannot, does not, or will not look in any other direction than the one one has been trained to look in. A philosophical pickle indeed, and one specifically targeted by differentiation, if one has a mind to. On the other hand, I have a neighbour who told me: "oh no, bipolar can never stop. It may go away, but it'll be back again.' How does one such as I refute such an assertion? Impossible, except perhaps with parallel experiences and intersecting theories, these latter validations of a sort, a la scientific method I guess. And there's the rub. The Scientific Method, entitlement for some, dogmatic hooey for others. And how redily does one give up one's socially and scientifically mandated authority to a mere supplicant asking for and perhaps at the same time challenging that authority? A sign in the whirlpool at my community centre reads "do not... without the consent of your doctor." Not advice. Consent! I have also talked to several people who have been diagnosed bi-polar, telling them of my claim, that I have succeeded in my battle with manic-depression, and to a person have been disregarded. I feel like Copernicus. It seems to be beyond comprehension that this could be so. To my mind, were I confronted with a person who claimed to have beaten what ails me, I would want a detailed account of just how that was. Not to be in these cases. These people have been convinced of their 'disability,' wear it like a badge, and nothing it seems is going to get in the way of that. And where did these people get this fatal certainty? Why, from doctors? Who else. So what is the poor health seeker supposed to do in the face of the ubiquitous "doctor's orders"  and the preponderance of scientific' (i.e.'most likely' - "Depression," the National Institute of Mental Health, USA, [NIMH] talking about what causes depression) opinion that prevails today?

I was diagnosed Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 at different stages of the game, by different doctors of course. Not to mention several other medical opinions that went by the way on my journey to the Self. Academic bean counters seeking to validate their regurgitated training. So much for scientific consistency, not to mention certainty. And not that I begrudge this necessarily. Doubt,  uncertainty, and even scientific method is the very bedrock of discovery. But what does one do when the one's mandated to help can not question their own firmly and prescribed beliefs. In the final analysis, the only real 'authority' of one's self is... one's Self. On a certain level (npi), it's all just opinion, and you know what they say about opinion.*

Self Disclosure - I call what I had manic-depression, because that's what it felt like to me. I've been manic, I've been depressed, but I can't say I've ever felt 'polar,' not to mention bipolar. Sounds like some kind of gay Santa's elve thing. Regardless of the diagnoses or the label, for more than twenty years I endured a pretty much steady annual cycle of  two three month periods of full blown depression and mania, interspersed with two three month 'transitional' periods, these transitions comprised of short, 9-14 day cycles of up and down, all of the above feeling like a ride on a particularly intense and screwy emotional roller coaster. In more prosaic terms, I know what it is to lay on a couch or in a bed for months at at time, depression the "pit of despond" I spiralled deeper and deeper into day by interminable day, unable to do anything outside of the bare essentials, stuck to my sofa like last week's spaghetti. And I know mania, believe me, mania so high cocaine doesn't touch it, songs, poems and other creative endevours pouring out of my mouth like "endless rain into a paper cup, my musicianship at a peak, I profoundly glib, my mood so jubilant and intense friends avoided me like the plague And I know what it's like to short cycle between both, one day just really great, the next not so thank you very much. And, just like that it seems, it's all gone. Like the calm after a hurricane. Ahhh. And not really just like that either. It took years, and a lot of trial and error, and a little serendipity along the way. But here I am, in uncharted territory, life a vast river and I, smack dab in the middle, moving along now with the flow, my once cycling and alternating moods morphing into a cohesive, unified whole. Not just feeling better, mind you, or 'coping,' thank  you very much, but now, after years of internal division and misapprehended repression, very much my Self, intact, whole, and with some significant data, however anecdotal to some, to back up the promise of my seemingly improbable prognosis. A significant factor: I wrote this article during my 'depression zone.' That is decidedly atypical. The only truly significant factor left, as far as I am concerned,** is time, and I'm experiencing that like I never have before. Ahhh indeed! After 50 years of being an emotional zombie, I am feeling, real time again. And it is "the best of times, [and] it [is] the worst of times."

To Drug or to Drone On: So what is the ‘state of the art’ regarding treatment of depressive 'disorders' these days? It seems that out of all the choices with which one is faced, it kind of all boils down to two main avenues of approach: pharmacology, or psychology, i.e. repress it, or express it. On the repress it side of the coin we have the National Institute of Mental Health, USA, (NIMH) and its "detailed booklet that describes Depression symptoms, - causes, and treatments, with information on getting help and coping." The NIMH more or less champions the pharmacological approach, with scant nod to psychology, this latter discipline relegated in the NIMH's estimation to gathering data regarding "any family history of depression or other mental disorder, [to] get a complete history of [one's] symptoms," (NIMH, Depression), I suppose to corroborate genetic hand me down theory, or to deal with the coping thing. No mention of psychology perhaps playing a major role. The heavy lifting according to the NIMH is to be done with drugs, or perhaps some light tinkering a la Cognitive or ITP Therapy for "for mild to moderate depression...," and once again, only for the coping thing. Hold your nose and turn around three times whispering.... Welcome to the lab. "Research [indicates] that depressive illnesses are disorders of the brain," and as such, according to the NIMH, are hard wired and need science, or at least, drugs or some other physical agent to dispel their deleterious effects. The NIMH creates the impression, if not quite out and out stating it, that manic-depression  is a physical condition of some sort, somatic, genetic perhaps, or chemically induced, a disorder that once manifest, is a permanent feature of one's singularity: a disability that "Most likely, [depression] is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors," i.e. just about anything under the sun. Most likely indeed, of course, and if one is looking at treating symptoms with chemicals while having basically no real idea as to what is causing them, then what else can one do really but try to minimize the adverse effects of those symptoms.

Trouble is, the NIMH and it's ilk doesn't just stop there, but at the same time, experiments on whomever with almost whatever comes to 'scientific' hand, because that's what the scientific method is all about.  But many 'anti-depressants' are not just high falutin pain killers and relaxants. They are mind altering chemicals aimed at manipulating or otherwise affecting the genetic/chemical/biological structure of the brain and the genetic/chemical/biological chimera that are to be found just around discovery's dark corner. And in the case of manic depression "...[it being] a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life," we have a model that makes the 'mental health consumer' not only a victim of their own biology, but a human lab rat sipping from the pharmaceutical trough, resigned to a lifetime of pharmacological dependency.  "Research indicates," a scientific proclamation on the one hand, and "most likely" a self serving disclaimer on the other. More opinion, but opinion etched in the very DNA of scientific supremacy, and dispensed in impressive little booklets with good English. Just, 'open up please, and tell me how does this one make you feel?' And what an impressive cornucopia of pharmacia does the NIMH indeed present in its list of chemical candidates they would like you to try out for them. The question is, how interested are you in joining the rest of the lab rat population?

On the other side of the coin we have the view that depression is a psychological effect, a signpost really, symptomatic perhaps of cognitive mal adaptations, current adverse circumstances etc, these causal agents resolvable thru various psychological and otherwise 'talk' therapies such as deep psychotherapy, cognitive, gestalt, group therapy and so on, with no end necessarily in sight. Another morass of confusion and indecision indeed. Where does one begin?

To my mind, there is but one place to begin, and that is at the beginning. And there is one approach that to me bears special scrutiny above and beyond and decidedly before the rest, and the championing of which in it's absence is remarkable to me. To Alice Miller (1923-2010), psychologist and world renowned author of such books as: Drama of the Gifted Child, Thou Shalt Not Be Aware, For Your Own Good, and many others, and to my mind, a leading if not the leading resource in these regards, one's childhood memories and emotions, repressed and unresolved, represent a fundamental denial of one's very Self, "the categorical denial of the pain we suffered at the beginning of our lives... harmful in the extreme,"(Alice Miller Depression: Compulsive Self-Deception), depression the debilitating result of this denial. Once the repressed and unresolved emotions are addressed, depression will dissipate like smog lifting from doused peat moss. Miller's advice: seek out these feelings and express them. (To someone significant if possible - nb). These feelings are in you, are you, and what it takes to heal oneself is listening to, hearing, recognizing, acknowledging and expressing those feelings.

And, if it is indeed as Alice Miller and her proponents say, that at the bottom of one's depression or other symptoms of repression, i.e. anxiety, mania, etc is a Self denied, histories and attendant feelings half dead carcasses rotting in the caverns of the unconscious as it were, mouldering in ambered childhood as we mosey along our prescribed and prescriptioned adult ways, pursuing all things worldly and in the final analysis, mostly irrelevant, then it would seem to me that not only are anti-depressants and the like not conducive to recovery, but that they are actually counter productive to recovery, as what they do is add yet another  layer to the denial of the Self and the feelings and such that are the cause of one's depressive and otherwise symptoms in the first place, these latter not disabilities or disorders, but rather, signposts indicating the nature of the problem, much as a Charlie Horse signals one to the existence of a muscle cramp.

In my case it took years of trying this and that, workshops here, therapists there, encounter and 12 step programs everywhere, trying on remedies and therapies like cheap clothing in a discount store, hoping for that nugget or personal truth that will make one's search worthwhile, and finally arriving where I am today, witness to the results I speak of, not slave to some theory or ideology, my ride on the bipolar express done (at least for now as my sceptics would have it),  my emotions now real time, my moods stable and a more tolerable range, my life a whole new ballgame. My path? Re-association, Individuation, Ego Death, Mindfulness, Anger Management, Reconciliation and Actualization, and in that order basically, all steps in a process leading to my very Self.  But that's another story, another article, another day.

And, if, as Alice Miller points out, "... we have to avoid mental pain at all costs... [and] there is basically not much left to sustain our vitality..." as a result of avoiding mental pain," then I can attest to that personally also, from a visceral perspective, and am, in fact, the very corroboration of Alice Miller's findings in this regard. Now free from the need to suppress my repressed childhood emotions, these now having been expressed in meaningful and ultimately cathartic ways, there is nothing which I need to keep the lid on, and I do indeed find I have much more... brainpower, ease,  libido (a la Jung?) perhaps, that sustains me somehow, and enables me to do things that I never could before, no matter how hard I tried, this new found vitality another unlooked for dividend in my pursuit of self awareness. Truly, I awake refreshed each day to a new and wonderfully stable emotional affect. Life is just getting better and better.

So there you have it, more or less, from a mental health seeker's perspective. The matters at hand:
  • Depressive Illnesses, especially manic-depression
  • The Treatments: pharmacology or psychology. And let me restate my case in a nutshell. On the one side of the coin we have the notion, or perhaps belief is a better word, ironic that, that emotional childhood development has no significant basis in the outcome of a human adult, and that we are more or less meat machines with defective parts that need correcting, adjusting, replacing, tailoring, tinkering with or masking, whatever, and that a lifetime of coordinated pharmalogica is the required prospectus. On the other side of the coin we have observations and at least one experience that indicates that yes indeed, events and circumstance during one's developmental years have profound effects on who we are as adults, and that we can do something about the less pleasant symptoms of these early, negative circumstances by reaching into ourselves and coming to terms with what we find there.
  • The Testimonial. One who has negotiated the trips and turns outlined above and has come to a personal and satisfactory resolution, drug and symptom free.
  • The Conclusion.  Does one put one's faith in one's self, or in the hands and opinions of others who, while perhaps well meaning and knowledgeable to the nth degree, know nothing more than what they have been taught and have observed thru the lens of that training? I have never felt better in my life, and I now know what works for me.
*Anonymous - Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one, (and I'm no exception - nb).
** In the interest of full disclosure, I have two more time points to go, one regarding an inverted cycle anomaly, the other the next 'manic zone.' However, having just moved thru the depression period sans event, there being no 'there' there it seems, no deep pit of despond to cycle down to, I am reasonably confident of my positive prognosis. As I say, only time will tell. And in that, the bean counters have their way.

Bumpy re-entry (into the calm of the river)

Proving to be a tad bumpy as I settle into this model of behaviour. It's going to take some serious regimen I think. I have to just shut my mouth and let things transpire without needing or trying to control these situations. The incident with Kristina was such an event. I felt I had to protect her. I was wrong.

Still, I feel I am succeeding here, that I know what I am doing, and am continuing on in this vein. It has the added thing of making me mindfull at all times, because I now know, sort of, in that eyes shut feely kind of way, what is going on. I am removing myself from these situations,  and passing thru them.At least, that's what it feels like.

Dec 18, Sunday.
This is working. I am managing to keep it all in, more or less, and more and more each day as I get used to it. To shut up and let happen what's happening. Still an awful lot of hed cheeze to let go, but I can feel I am succeeding, letting it all happen without me doing anything as best I can, other than what is necessary at the time - that's the tricky bit. What is necessary, and what not - to function peaceably, reasonably, and calmly any given situation. I know, I'm looking for perfection, but what else is there to do really?

Tweak # 1. On the Bus Again (Disassociation)

Was on the bus today. On my smart phone, smarting away when this woman, scratch that, girl, gets on the bus with a child in a stroller. She wheels the stroller in, sits on the right side of the bus in the seat facing the rest of the passengers, with her child, a two or so year old, pre-verbal, sitting not three feet away directly facing me. No biggie, as I love children, crying ones an' all. Chrono children that is. The larger variety are a different story. Simultaneously, as the girl sits, she whips out her cell phone and starts talking to someone, and her child starts to communicate displeasure. The mother keeps on talking on her phone, and as the child gets louder, the mother finally reaches over the stroller and dangles a small magazine somewhere in the child's head area. As far as the mother is concerned, it could be up the child's ass for all her intent. After some time, the child finally sees the book, and tries to take it but drops it almost immediately. The child tries to retrieve the mag,  but the book is just out of reach of her little fingers. The child starts communicating it's displeasure once more as it reaches and reaches for the magasine, signalling (at least in my eyes) that it can't get the book. The mother keeps on talking on her phone, in effect ignoring her child. This is Complication/trigger # 1. I am considering getting the book for the child, aware of the fact that I am not the kid's babysitter and it's not really my job, don't want to presume, when the mother finishes her phone conversation and then starts to dial again, further ignoring her child's call for assistance. "Could you pay attention to your child" I say, indicating the book and the child's pleas. Complication/Trigger # 2. The mother takes umbrage at this, and starts to hassle me, and I defend my self. I feel attacked, and retaliate in kind, rather than just shut up and leave it alone. I am, at this stage of my recovery, incapable of shutting up and leaving it alone. I am fully engaged. Trigger # 3. At this point, a woman behind me starts berating me, for what I really don't know, as I wasn't hurting anyone, only, in fact, sticking up for the child. Complication/trigger #3. I retaliate, on the offence again, telling her to mind her own business, that I am not doing anything wrong etc, and we all go thru a hissy fit, with no one hurt, but emotions higher than desired. I am not over angry though, only defending myself against a careless, uncommunicative mother and an intruding third party entry. I feel, and am attacked on all sides. Literally. With more to come.

Now, I do not intend to excuse myself here, nor do I intend to apologize. I did nothing wrong, in that I was not hurting anyone, and meant no harm. On the other hand, I was not able to prevent this, as I really do not, and did not see anything 'wrong' in what I did. Ill advised yes. Reactive yes. I was on the kid's side, although I have to admit, I was also telling the mother how to deal with her child. I did have thought that what was going on here, directly in front of me, the effect being that the child was basically yelling at me, was a direct result of this mother's negligence. And negligence it was, in no uncertain terms. The kid was trapped in its stroller, locked in, and needed its mother's assistance.

I would have put this on the Inner Bitch page, but the interesting thing about this to me is that I am not bitching about it. It is not eating at me, and I am resolved in this, in that it is not grist for the internal rationalization mill, and I really do not know what else I could have done, other than to pick up the book for the child, and thus get myself involved in a game of 'how many times can I get the stupid adult to pick up the magazine' game, the mother's job, or move away from the situation, which I just didn't think of, and which, upon reflection, would be the wisest thing to do, regardless of the fact that this mother doesn't deserve children, and that I would have felt like I was deserting a child in a reasonable time of need. No, the reason I put this here is to elicit advice or opinion on how to avoid this, for I truly do not see how to change my actions in this regard, considering that I don't think I actually did anything wrong. I do have a hair trigger though, and if I am attacked, am easily on the defensive, 'offence being the best defence.' Nor do I think I am "right" in this regard. I just don't know how "I" could have done anything different, being who I am.

Nor do I feel I have contradicted the theme of Progress Report # 2. If anything, I got caught in rapids I did not see, and am out of them now, back in the middle of the river, just wondering how to spot or avoid those rapids in the future. My best bet at this time is to go to the very back of the bus, sit in the corner seat with ear buds and blinders on. Ha Ha.

Complication # 3. Coda to this little fracas was that this young, white, black hat, black jacket, dark pants shithead, under the guise of some idea of modern day 'chivalry,' comes running up behind me just after I got off the bus yelling 'hassle my girlfriend you fucking transvestite" and hit me from behind in the back of the hed before running away. No biggie, just surprising, and I reported the assault for the record. He hit my skull with his knuckles, so he probably hurt himself more than he hurt me. Moron. I can only infer that he was on the bus, although I suppose his 'girlfriend' could have phoned him. And, while I am at it, I did pretty good in this. I fell to the ground to avoid being hit, and so only got hit on the back of my skull, on bone, so no biggie there, and I was up and ready to defend myself immediately, and phoning the police as soon as I saw he was running away. I have no doubt that had things gone a different way, I would have started to defend myself. I am no longer afraid.

ps - trying to keep mindfulness in mind here. If anything, that is my salvation in these on the bus and other similar regards. The question is, how to keep mindfulness 'on' all the time. Seems no matter what I do, I find myself in the state of mindlessness no matter what I do. I just end up there somehow, going along without that inner state of awareness, until woken up by something like this. I guess the answer really here is in this somehow. Is this a form of disassociation I wonder? A mild case perhaps, or not even mild perhaps, just is. Considering my history, why not? I am triggered, in this case, by the woman not paying attention to her child. Is that me? and I am identifying with this kid? Hmmm. And the disassociation is between me and the kid inside of me that is signaling what happened way back when? And if this is the case, then I just participated in a scenario from my past in the present, and was there to witness the event. I zero in on, and identify with, the kid as it is ignored by it's caregivers. This is Alice Miller land, where one is acting out, in all sorts of ways and variations, the scenarios, repressed and unresolved, from one's past onto the situations one encounters in one's later years. Double wow.

p.p.s. Now that I have let it rest overnight, I think I do indeed need to do a regimen of not expressing myself on the bus. I am going to put a muzzle on me for the next three months, and not talk at all on the bus, regardless, unless I am with someone I am talking to. That's all I can do. This is my path to mindfulness. The bus is a crucible for me, where things just happen all the time, and I don't know what else to do.

  • Actually, given my later thought regarding disassociation, I think I need to let this ride. This looks like very promising shit. I really think I am on to something here. This goes to the very core of who I am, and not on an academic level, but a visceral level, where I can do something about it. The regimen would be good to build mindfulness, except that the bus is where I get a lot done. Jeez.
p.p.p.s. It also occurs to me this morning, as I edit and clean this piece up, that I did accomplish one thing. The girl with the child did end up paying attention to her kid after this, turning her child to face her, and talking to her. That she was telling the child that I was bad is immaterial. Yea, me and the kid won, even if it was a messy victory. Ha! Wow, isn't that interesting.

Progress Report #2

I feel like I have moved thru something quite large, like an endless series of rapids in a huge river, i.e. the past fifty years and some of my life. I am now in the relative calm of the middle of that river as it continues to flow on, and I am moving along with the flow quite comfortably, and am learning how to orient myself in a more or less forward and upright position from which I can see what's around me and what's coming quite easily, things like the sun and sky and the river banks and such, and more precarious things like rocks and stumps, flotsam and jetsam, and other rapids upcoming. I am now learning how to avoid these precariie with relative ease and fuss, needing only small adjustments to move myself out of their way. And even when I do snag on something, I am learning how to detach from these much more easily now, and so keep on moving without getting hung up on them overlong, the massively gentle flow of the river now the place where I live. Thusly am I now learning how to to keep in touch with the flow of "the river which is everything."

This is decidedly better than before, when i was trapped in the rapids, being tossed and turned willy nelly in a never ending froth of turbulence and roar, and I am now learning to relax and bask in the radiance of this new found metaphor extraordinaire as I consider its larger and more extensive extrapolations.

So this is what's it's like to be alive. (nb-Dec 3, '11).

No need to couch this in poetic ambiguity. It's simple.

Back when I had a heart, years ago, I shut down. The pain too much to bear for my 9 year old frame, of mind, my heart.

I did it automatically. Somehow. I didn't have to be taught. No one had to teach me how. I did it all by myself. Instinct?

When too much is too much, the body, the psyche, just knows I guess

Just stops.
Feeling
Whatever

So easy.
Like breathing.
A baby could do it.

Turning it back on was another thing. Not so simple. A sticky trick one plays on one's self. One doesn't hurt if one doesn't feel. Or cry. Or laff. Whatever.

Empathy? Impossible.

But now, miraculously, I'm free. Petardless. Joy in its many rainbow hued splendours. Unbounded. Sorrow, deep as an ocean trench, wide as the south pacific. Pain. Like a knife sliding across a cornea, salty tears an electrified cat 'o nine tails lashing the freshly flayed bones clean.

Keen
Excruciating
Intoxicating
My heart doesn't know whether to burst or break.

So this is what it's like to be alive.

Here's the thing. When I shut down, I was too Jung to know better, unable to bear the "slings and arrows of [my] outrageous fortune."

50 years later, emerging from my self imposed solitary confinement like a bewildered Rumplestiltskin blinking in the friendly and intensely penetrating glare of the mid day sun, eyes watering, knees wobbling, yet so comforted by the warmth, so happy in the moment, joy a cherry popsicle, I look around to share the moment...

And

There's no one.

No "So glad you're back."
No "How are you"
No "You're safe now."
No "Tell me all about it."

To hold me and let me know I'm here.

Holy Shit!

Here's what I'm thinking. That the human race is the dawning of the consciousness of the universe. It's just possible that after all these millennia, that the universe, a babe in it's own life cycle, has finally figured out a way to be conscious of itself, and we are the first iteration of that process, as the life energy, the Universal Libido (a la Jung), evolves from it's pre-prescient, infantile state to the mature Universality that it is, and is becoming as it wends its way to self actualization.

That's just as possible as any of the nut bar, elitist and otherwise religions and philosophies out there. And all hubris aside, Holy shit! Why not? This is a conjecture that I can sink my belief into.

Work in Progress (Me, In a Nutshell+*)

Time Line

In the Beginning.
1951- 1960 ish - outgoing, talented and exuberant kid, real time emotions. Context: chaos, misery, strife, physical, emotional and intellectual abuse, abandonment. My reality.

Disassociation
1960 - April 1989 - desperate, homesick, disassociate, lose my mojo, a hubot:-victim now of circumstance and ill-informed choices; second hand and pseudo emotion, kleptomania, dressing/identification, displaced anger. Become a caricature of my choices, drifting, isolated, internally confused and externally defensive.

Re-association (with the place where the feelings went)
1989 - 2010 - Serendipity, awakening, deconstruction, differentiation, 9/5; despair externalized i.e. bipolar, heart attack, rejection, suicide, ego-death,  seek outside help, in pieces, reconstruct, anger management, last piece of the puzzle, nanci/frission/fear, individuation.

Self Actualization
2010 - Now and beyond - mojo back, catharsis, real time emotions, exuberant, develop talents, take on life with focus.

From out of the ashes of my parent's chaotic, discordant and ill-conceived marriage, I, Richard (Nelson Brown), become a fragmented, disassociated personality, a broken toy doll neglected and cast aside by squabbling children, 'splitting off' internally and quite unconsciously at the age of nine. Lacking any empathy modelling, I soon exhibited many psychopathic tendencies, i.e. pathological lying, kleptomania, denial, glibness, irresponsibility, myopia, shallow aspect, a bit player in my own life.

At the time of my disassociation, shutting down to avoid the extreme pain I was feeling, concurrently cutting off all my feelings, (other than anger and the unchecked, displaced, unconsciously motivated and extreme exhibition of such), and totally dependent upon my emotionally and otherwise absent father for some kind of 'human' and 'meaningful' connection, I was interminably and narcissistically bound to my him for years. He was the mirror thru which I saw the world, and what a warped view that was. I was incapable of change, real, internal, character developing change that is, a fly caught in the reflection of my father's petrified amber existence, developing my ill conceived defence mechanisms into a life of isolation, 'criminal' activities and endless iterations of a nomadic army brat life, with broken relationships and many relocations.

Serendipity struck in 1989, and thru the miracle of cocaine and the 5th step of the 12 steps of A.A. and it's ilk, I, now Nelson, the reluctant 'wrangler' of an an ersatz collection of schizophrenic chimeras, became reconnected to my repressed feelings, meeting for the first time the 'others;' the Kleptomanic, Ricki the tranny, Dick the Biker, Richard, the shattered, hurt one, all part of me, but somehow not part of me. Denizens of denial. It was an incredible period, and I experienced thoughts and feelings that I hadn't felt in years, the volume of which threatened to overwhelm me, in both quality and quantity. From this point on and for the next 20 years or so, I engaged in all manner of therapeutic ventures, one on one, group, workshops etc, as I strove to put right what I had found that was wrong, one step forward, two steps back and on and on, ad nauseum.

Interlude
There came a time, my suicide period, when I had had enough. Stuck on an oscillating roller coaster of bipolarity, my body breaking down, I tried several times to kill myself, culminating in a final effort which was thwarted, serendipity again, by two mexican desparados. Not able to kill myself, not willing to live with myself, I turned myself in to the 'authorities,' and asked for help. This culminated in anger management, and finally, RLE, which turned out, unexpected, to be the last piece of the individuation process I was, to a certain degree unconsciously, undergoing. Combining the frisson of my gender libido with the fear of exposure, the process of individuation completed itself, and I actualized. I had freed up the necessary parts of my psyche, and I 'jelled' I guess,or emulsified, like hollandaise sauce. I became 'whole,' the flower bloomed, I no longer the seedling. No longer separated from large chunks of my psyche, no longer split off and disassociated, I became capable, for the first time in 50 years, of organic, psychological, and other change, not to mention an active participant and protagonist in my own life. It seems I have come full circle: from the emotionally crippled hubot my chaotic childhood and extreme 'family' life had engendered, into whom I was in the first place. Me.**now nanci blu, flower on the Tree of Life. And life is great.

+ This is a work in progress. I will be editing/shaping it further as I go. I'm starting to get into it. As it happens, so will I.

*Anyone reading this might be tempted to say, yea, so what. We all go thru shit, childhood and otherwise. My point here is not that I went thru shit, but that I chose subsequently to wade thru that shit, to figure out how that shit had shaped me and my perspective, and concurrently, to clean out those reeking unstable stalls, a Herculean task to be sure, and not for the feint of heart. And as a result of that work, I am now as you see me. From a shattered, psychopathic, isolated and disaffected pimple on the ass of progress, I have been transformed into a conscientious, empathetic and productive member of society. It took me twenty odd years, but I can honestly say, it was worth it.

** That I am choosing to live the rest of my life as a 'female' may seem somewhat extreme or... counter intuitive to some, and is somewhat of a mystery to me. However, this is how I find myself, and happily so, and given the extreme satisfaction and well-being that I feel as a result of what I am becoming, and seeing that my sex/gender reorientation seems to be somehow intrinsically wrapped up in the actualization of my once again found self, I feel I must see this thru. I feel great, seem to have become un-bipolarized (two more time points to go), and getting better all the time. I should stop?

Anyway, that's me, nanci blu, in a nutshell. Now, let's get busy.

To Tranny or not to Tranny

In response to Kelly Osborne's "I'm Retiring the Word 'Tranny'... Will You Join Me?" on Huffington Post, Nov 20,'11. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kelly-osbourne/transgender-day-of-remembrance_b_1100542.html?show_comment_id=119355172#comment_119355172 )

…"tr*nny" is a derogatory and hurtful word."

Ackshully, insult is in the intention of the user. I take no umbrage when addressed as transsexual or tranny, or even ‘fucking fag’ come to think on it, regardless of the intention of my interlocutors. ‘Sticks and stones...’ And in terms of the n-word, one was coined originally as an insult, a derogatory, spiteful class marker, whereas transsexual was used to describe those going thru a medical process. Apples and oranges. Those who aim this innocuous barb at me are wasting their time. Might as well call me nancy.

I am a transsexual, a person who is changing my hormonal configuration and primary sexual characteristics from that of male to female, regardless of the question or validity of my gender identity considerations. An MTF. A 'tranny.' Not Mr. or Mz, Mrs, or Ze., but "T" Nanci Blu. Empirically, and in the context of the sex/gender binary world we live in, that works for me.

Am I against bigotry, ignorance and intolerance in these regards? Of course I am. But I see no reason to get hung up on a slang contraction of a word that was originally used (Hirschfeld, Cauldwell, Benjamin et al) to describe what I am going thru.

So thank you for your consideration, but as far as I am concerned, let’s not confuse the rest of the world debating arcane slang terminology and get to work on the attitudes and ignorance behind those words.

Happy "T" day.

Revelation

It came to me this morning. I don't know what it feels like to be absolutely sure. About someone.

Anyone.

Perhaps not even myself.*

I have no previous experience in this regard. It's not in my frame of reference. No formative experiences of love and warmth,** no certainty of succour***. For me, all was discord, chaos, uncertainty, and loss. No fine whine here, just history. By the time love got to me,**** it was too late. I had retreated to my frosty fortress.

Alone.

Safe.

And even though I am beginning now to engage all sorts of new relationships in open and give and take ways, these spectres of my past taunt me, and I worry incessantly should the slightest hiccup occur in any given situation: that I have said something, done something, want something wrong. I am on tenterhooks in this new land of outreach, frozen, waiting sometimes seemingly forever, crouched at the bottom of the stairs in my pj's listening intently to the concerned (so I think) murmurs above, waiting for the axe to fall, not able to reach out and connect, because of course, I 'm not supposed to be there.

So I put on the old front, retreat once more, at least to the borders, secure in isolation, act like it doesn't matter, pretend that I'm ok, that everything is ok, business as usual.

Solitude, once a refuge, stretches on like a vast desert wasteland.

I am so fucking thirsty.

* though it's thought processes like this that make me think I am making some headway in this regard. I am actually starting to be able to observe myself. That's new, and intriguing.
** at least, not from mom and dad. They were too broken. We've all been broken.
*** Edna, one of my father's girlfriends back then, she did me good, I felt safe with her. She could have saved me. But that would be another life, and she was gone too soon.
**** And it knocked several times. My bad.

FYI

October 3, '11

Just your basic entry really. So much is happening that I am not writing much at this time, and this site is starting to look like it's not going anywhere. Not so. I'm maybe just a tad preoccupied with other things at the moment, singing being the main of those. And to be perfectly honest, if my singing is going where I think it is going, then I won't be doing anywhere near as much writing, or anything for a while, as singing is how I want to express myself.*

My feminization is proceeding apace, and I am in line for my final evaluation prior to Sexual Reassignment Surgery (SRS). If all goes according to plan, I should be getting my boygina in the spring. Yea nanci blu.

I was out to visit my 'folks' in August and all went extremely well, as we buried the past, my father much relieved, my step mother and I newly aligned, she also recovering extremely well from her oncological perturbations. I experienced a huge emotional catharsis, and am much the better for it.

Perhaps in conjunction, but not without other adjuncts, I have experienced a huge (did I say huge? that might be a bit of an understatement) break thru with my singing apparatus, and am seeking a compatible singing coach to help me whip what amounts to a new voice into shape. I receive unsought for and spontaneous appreciation of my singing and playing everywhere I play and sing these days, and I hope soon be performing for a living. An old dream, and a cherished one that I will never give up trying for as long as I think I have what it takes, which I think I do**. Almost daily my voice gets stronger and stronger, and I experience new depths of ability that are blowing my mind. It's like someone took the 200 lbs of chains and other impediments that were somehow on my back off, and I am now experiencing for the first time what it feels like to function sans chains or whatever it was that was fettering the free and natural potentials of my vocal equipment. I look forward to surprising a lot of people.

Let's see, other stuff. Oh yea, I had a bed bug attack, mostly transients, and had my place sprayed. There was silver lining to this, in that I purged myself of a whole bunch of stuff really only relevant to my old life, and my place is now in a better shape, uncluttered by old ghosts and unnecessary  and I think I am finally on the track to looking after it appropriately. It really was a mess there for a while as I stayed caught between my past and my future.

I should also mention that while at this particular juncture, i.e. september/october/december, i am usually in full depression, it so happens, due especially to the work I have been doing in the last three years I believe, that I am nowhere near being depressed. It is my belief, subject to a couple more time points and observation, that I am no longer experiencing the manifestations of my once bipolar state. I attribute this to the therapy I have been doing the last 20 odd years, to the breakthru I had regarding PTSD and anger episodes in the last two years, and to the unlooked for result of my Real Life Experience started in June of 2011, when I fully accepted and incorporated "nanci" into my self. This latter, it seems, and I believe, was incidentally the final key to my experiencing what Carl G. Jung termed "Individuation," which I consider to the the penultimate step prior to self actualization. Of course, being the lay bitch that I am, who knows if I really know what I am talking about. What I do know is that my life seems to be working now, and it's full steam ahead. What do all those crazies know. If being nanci is what it takes to experience life the way I am now experiencing it, then so be it, and 'nanci' I am. Nanci blu that is, in all manifestations of the word.

All in all dear reader, I am now living my life, full time. I am spontaneous, clear, happy, and certain, and feel my feelings in real time. Who knew. Wow.

nanci blu, Oct 3'll

*Ok, here's the situation. When I was somewhat younger than six, I heard my father whistle for a cab. His whistle was so loud and piercing that at least one witness remarked at how good his whistle was. I, of course, was hugely impressed by my father's lipisoidal prowess. Cut to ten years later when I was an emerging teen, and wolfe whistling was a prerequisite to teen life. I tried for weeks to whistle, unsuccessfully. Then, one day, seemingly out of nowhere, I emitted a piercing whistle, a chirp really, but it was definitely a wolf whiste, and I knew I was on the right track. I could do it. It took me a subsequent three weeks of constant, 24/7 practice to perfect my own style and such. Suffice it to say that I was a chip off the old block, and my whistle, while never tested, was at least a rival to my father's. Cut to twenty years later.I am in a strip joint, the cobalt I think, and there was a woman from the states doing her act, which involved snakes or something like that. She had some posters she was giving away, to the loudest whistle. I of course joined in the general melee, and was doing well. This other patron, unknown to me at the time, singled me out I guess, thought I had the right stuff I guess, and started coaching me as I whistled. We won, and I think it was indeed in part to his 'getting my back' and coaching me along that won me the day. I would like to say that I gave him the poster, but I don't think I did. I really should have. I had my whistle. What did he get? Nada.I didn't need the poster. Regardless, I went away pretty impressed with myself, even if it was just whistling. I had won a contest, and in a street cred kind of way, amongst real combatants, to whom wolf whistling was considered a skill, and a required part of one's street equipment.

So what, right. Well, here's the significance. I have been trying to sing for 50 years or so now. Up until this year, my singing was mediocre, inconsistent, and of little merit. That, of course, has not stopped me trying. Given my bipolar state, during mania, I would experience some fairly impressive improvement in my singing, which  would, however, disappear as fast as my mania did. But then just this summer, in the spring of my depression zone, I experienced the equivalent of the wolf whistle chirp that got me on track to becoming a preeminent street cred wise wolf whistler. I have been at it hard ever since, exercising my vocal chords that is,  and am experiencing** the same escalation of ability as I did during the tweaking stage of my whistling. Of course, there are muscles involved here, my vocal chords, and I think it may take them a little time to perhaps get stronger. Not really sure, other than it all seems to be working. Now all I need is a venue. I'll keep you posted.

As for the guy in the bar who coached me to a winning berth, the significance of that is how I responded to his ministrations. It is my belief that he became a father substitute in that moment, hooked into my need for a male role model, the type of role model that I never had, and that had my father been of similar mind, and had paid that kind of attention to me, our lives would be vastly different today. And who's to say which path would have been better? nb.

It's All In The Assitude

Over the years, I have tried to get accustomed to walking in heels, but with little success. I have had a few glimpses or moments when I have accomplished something that felt right and resembled someone who knew what they were doing, but not with any regularity, and only when I was quite stoned. I just couldn’t seem to get it right, and was starting to think that maybe it was that some girls, or perhaps 'girls' specifically, what are built to walk in heels. Another reason to reject this inconvenient gender 'foible' of mine.

What i had been working with

Was I going to accept this bogus rational during my Year of Living Transformationally? I decided not, and started to focus seriously on the issue. First, I realized that all the heels in my possession were fairly high, four inches or more, and that perhaps I was biting off more than I could chew. So when I ran across a plain pair of a shorter heeled sandal type heels in my favorite second hand cheapie boutique, two strap pump thingies with a modest two to perhaps two and half inch heel, (maybe three) I bought them, they fit so well. I have big feet, clodhoppers really, appropriate for my 5'8" height, but that's no consolation, but these shoes made my feet look smaller and elegant. I loved them. And, oddly enough, they were actually very comfortable right right off the bat. This was a good sign.

The new ones

I wore them at work the next day, but just on the job. Didn't want to get a blister half way thru the day. I needn't have worried. They were great. I couldn’t remember having broken in a shoe more easily. A couple of days later, I wore them again, only this time, I wore them on the way to work, thinking this time to carry ballet pumps with me just in case. And off I went to catch the bus. Only to realize too late that I had forgotten the pumps. Oh well. I continued on my way, albeit a tad slowly. Thing was, it was not bad walking in them, but I had to slow my walk down to almost a crawl in order to walk without looking like a drunk, or an idiot. That was ok, but now I looked like I was out for a midnight stroll, and that is not a great way to get around anything other than a party, a shoe department, or a street corner, if you get my drift. However, I soldiered on, and made my way successfully to the bus stop.

When I disembarked my crosstown bus, it just so happened that my connector bus was at its stop, on the other side of the intersection; the cross walk light was still 'go.' I had to move quickly if i wanted to catch that bus. Without thinking, I just started running. And it was at that precise time that I connected with my heels. Because in order to run in heels, if you don't want to kill yourself, what one has to do is basically, run ‘like a girl.’ Any attempt to do otherwise is going to lead to disaster, either by misstep, or fashion faux pas. One has to prance if one wants to get anywhere quickly. And prance I did. By the time I got to the bus stop*, I ‘owned’ my heels. I had arrived, and in a timely fashion. I was now walking in my heels as if they were meant for me. Tra la la.

And as far as I can tell, that is the secret. One has to prance, sashay, or otherwise use one's ass to walk successfully in heels. Heels are all about attitude, about 'devil may care,' about ‘come and get it kind of stuff.’ Real rear view advertising. Dress ‘em up anyway you want, heels are ‘fuck me’ shoes, and you had better at least have that concept in mind if not the actual intention if you don’t want to look like you’re walking on stilts. It’s like décolletage. If one décolletages, people are going to stare at one's tits. That’s what décolletage is. Cleavage. Melons on display. If you are wearing décolletage, and trying to hide your cleavage, you're in the wrong game. You don’t like men raking your rack, don’t décolletage. Are men pigs? Of course they are, what else is new?  But if you want to walk correctly in heels, you just have to accept the fact that your ass is going to be in the air, on display, and take it in stride. It’s all girly. Assitude.*And yes, I did catch the bus.

Transsexuality and Consolidation: A Year of Living Transformationally

The main point of this ‘article’ or report is to illustrate how my decision to commit to a Real Life Experience (RLE) for the purpose of modifying a troublesome "neurosis" was incidental, yet instrumental if not key to the eventual success of the process of analysis and individuation I had undertaken about twenty years prior to this writing when I inadvertently discovered that I was disassociated, fragmented; an emotionally unstable psychological time bomb 'going off' all over the place. Had I not committed to this Real Life Experience, it is decidedly moot as to whether or no I would have achieved the ‘stable wholeness’ or ‘consolidation of self’ that I believe I am now experiencing.

"Bond of Union," M.C.Escher

This piece is also meant to be subjective, not theoretical. I have red a lot of material on what I possibly might be going thru, but I have yet to hear or read from anyone anyone who is writing that material espouse a personal experience in this regard. It’s all theory, and academic in the extreme. This is not theory. This is what happened, and is happening to me. I the following, I shall try to correlate my experience to the material that i have so far come across in the literature and research so far available to me.

Consolidation of self is the desired result of any process of self-identification and integration or individuation with a bent towards eventual psychological wellbeing. Despite all my efforts and years spent in this endeavour, I had really gotten nowhere with regard to this singular objective. While I had achieved some significant changes in my behavior and outlook, I was no nearer ultimate integration or wholeness or consolidation or whatever than when I had started. I didn’t know this at the time, but that was the fact of the matter. After all the therapies of varied stripe I had tried, I was still no more than an ad hoc collection of parts of myself, all jumbled together like a bag of unruly kittens and puppy dogs, with a pesky varmint or two thrown in. Thing was, knowing no better, and having done so much work on the various complexes and neuroses that had been so prevalent in my life, I still thought I was whole. I didn’t feel fragmented, or not myself. Little did I know.

In 2009, after having tried unsuccessfully to put myself out of my misery a few times, I was enrolled in a workshop on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I had heard about PTSD a couple of years prior, had understood that it dealt with anxiety and stress in adults dealing with major trauma or shell shock type situations, and thought it relevant to the unprocessed anxiety I had accumulated as a child. During the workshop I learned about ‘mindfulness’ and ‘grounding,’ two techniques for dealing with stress and the attendant manifestations of the afflicted thereof: triggering, disassociation, fight/flight reactions, anxiety, and what have you. At the time, I was also reading “Eastern Body, Western Mind,” by Anodea Judith. In it, Judith “employs the metaphoric language of the chakra system within the context of modern psychology,” and in reading it I encountered the concept of, ‘you are not your emotions.’ My engaging in a combination of these concepts and techniques resulted in my discovering that I could finally do something significant about the anger issues I had been dealing with more or less unsuccessfully over the past 20 or so years. Within months I had modified my anger behavior significantly and I knew I was on the right track.

The realization of this was like opening a time capsule. 20 year or so earlier, as part of all the work I was doing on myself, I had qualified for Sexual Reassignment Surgery (SRS) and had started on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). I had been wrestling with gender dysphoria all my life, and had at that time decided a sex change was the way to go. Trouble was the medications involved seemed to be inflaming my volatile moods and expressions, and to an extreme and uncomfortable degree. Given this, I thought the anger issue to be of a higher priority than the gender issue and decided to halt the HRT therapy until I had worked out the anger thing. The upshot of all of this was that twenty years later, when I realized that I was on the right path in this regard, I also realized that I could resume my gender work if I so wanted. As I had not put this troublesome aspect of myself to rest, I did, but with an added perspective. I was now quite inclined to think that this issue was something else other than a gender issue, a neurosis or complex, something that just needed the right analysis or procedure to resolve. So i proceeded to do just that.

What I now envisioned was that, having employed a similar tactic before with other neuroses i.e. kleptomania, smoking, etc, if I ‘allowed’ myself the space to once again to entertain the notion of a sex change, then chances were that at some point during the process, the whole thing being basically a neurosis, I would organically unearth the underlying causes of my 'gender dysphoria,' and the presenting behavior would disappear from my life like a desert mirage, or a bad dream, as had the kleptomania and smoking and such that had been such a big part of my earlier life. The question was, was I indeed in the throws of some deep seated neurosis or complex having to do with my mother’s abandonment of me, or perhaps regarding some unrealized jealousy of my sister and her relationship with our mother? This behavioral path of acceptance approach seemed to be the way to go.

"TRANSITION"
by Suzanne Cheryl Gardner

And so I now once again embarked upon the process of becoming a woman, albeit with this different focus. And it was essential to commit 100% to the whole thing. Only by doing that would I succeed in this venture. And in order to qualify for SRS under our Medical Service Plan in BC (MSP), one has to engage in the Real Life Experience process living as a woman for a year before one can qualify for SRS. So, I started presenting as a woman, dressing as a woman, undergoing psychiatric assessment and monitoring, with an eye towards Hormone Replacement Therapy and eventual Sexual Reassignment Surgery. I gave it my all, so confident was I in the efficacy of this approach that had worked so well for me in the past.

However, I also realized after a while that underneath all this certainty, I was also ambivalent about the whole thing. It seemed I was actually worried that I would succeed in this regard, that I would find the hidden ‘key’ to this neurosis, this thing I had longed for my entire life and also feared to no small degree, and that it would dissolve into nothing, leaving me somehow… incomplete, somehow less than I was before. It was an odd place to be, having for so long wanted to do rid myself of this inconvenient and seemingly irrational facet of my being, to find myself not wanting the outcome I had pursued for so long.

However, what happened was that the more I traveled this path, the more it felt right, and the more I began to realize how important this feminine alter ego, or aspect, or whatever, was to me. It was not going away, or ‘deconstructing.’ What’s more, I was finding more and more that I didn't want it to. And, I realized as I went along, I was no longer afraid of it anymore. It was now so out in the open that I no longer had anything to hide. Or so i thought. However, something was happening here that I had not expected, and this something was somehow enhancing of my life. My sense of self certainty was growing, and my outlook was definitely changing.

All that aside, I was still the ad hoc me that I had been when I started, still not integrated, and still not knowing so. I still felt like me, but, as i was to learn, that is not always the indicator it's cracked up to be. I was getting closer to this consolidation thing than I realized, but as one knows, until the hollandaise is emulsified, it's still just a mess of butterfat and congealing egg yolk. There was still something missing. And here’s what I think catalyzed the whole thing for me, the thing that allowed the disorganized and conflicted bunch of ‘me’s’ I still was to consolidate into the 'stable whole,’ the perfect hollandaise that I believe I now am.

For years, female attire, and especially me in it, has had a profound effect upon me. Puberty put a decidedly sexual spin on this, but I am coming to the conclusion that that was just a matter of crossed wires or misapplication. The thing is, I used to get a deep down jolt, a 'frisson' that thrilled me to my very core whenever I dealt with women’s clothing in any way, and that that frisson, in retrospect, was something separate from and actually transcended the sexual arousal I came to associate with women’s clothing over the years, this sexual connection starting only at puberty as it did. And as it is now, ‘women’s’ clothing have become 'my' clothing, and I am no more turned on by my female attire than I was wearing men’s clothes. I take great delight in what I now wear freely, but that is another thing entirely, an expression of who I am, and it's own reward. And I have come to think that this ‘frisson,’ this jolt or thrill is at center of, and directly connected to “ME,” to whom I truly am, or where I truly live within myself. Indeed, somehow it was my true self, above and beyond ego and the like. Fundamental.

Now, during this year of living as a woman I had been ‘given’ the name Roxana, or Ro, by a friend. And for what it was, it sufficed. For a while. As I progressed further down my RLE, starting now on the hormone replacement part of HRT, I realized however, that this name didn’t really suit me, and that I wanted or needed something else. Over the years, I had played with several names, names like Rickie, and Sassy, and Nancy, decidedly female names that I might adopt in my attempt to incorporate this feminine streak into my masculine presentation. There was something about the ie and y endings that got to me, appellative lace and frills. Very girly. And at the same time, too girly, too frilly. Trouble was that this was too close for comfort for the biker me that was putting up with all this girly stuff, the biker me that was nominally ‘in charge’ of the whole disassociated mess that I was. A dead giveaway to ‘his’ secret. And as much as ‘he’ told 'himself' that being open about this behavior of mine, conversationally that is, academically even, was healthy and honest and part of my original attempts at consolidation, the truth was that I was still afraid, ashamed perhaps, to own this behavior in anything more than third party discussion. So while I coveted these names, I also feared them. And to boot, the word nancy had a double entendre. A nancy boy is, well, you figure it out. What it sounds like: a nancy boy, certainly not a chopper riding outlaw type. What would happen to the integrity of that persona was I was to take on this name?

Ernie Bushmiller's "Slugo and Nancy"

And there it was, that frisson once again, fear, excitement and pleasure all wrapped up in one delicious, vibrant and clear as the chime of a Tibetan singing bowl moment. All this, when I actually considered using this name Nancy. When I realized this, and that I could experience this frisson, this jolt every time somebody called me by that appellation, I realized also that that might be a good thing. A very good thing actually. And what the hell. I was no longer presenting as a biker guy anyway. I was presenting as a woman, so what was the big deal? After some initial hesitation, some waffling back and forth over side issues, I decided to go with it, to lay bare my breasts as it were.

And that is when I believe “I” consolidated and fully integrated into this stable unity that is now Nanci Blu. I am not exactly sure how long the actual consolidation took; seconds, or perhaps infinity, or somewhere in between, it being the indefinably subtle yet somehow concrete thing it turned out to be. And this transformation, this consolidation may have happened instantaneously, but the realizations, the cascading corollaries, tangential and otherwise that have been legion and frequent over the last few months as the tumblers and facets of my psyche click into place like pieces of a very intricate 3D puzzle, may have taken place while I was as yet not able to instantly process what was happening to me, so radical and yet so benign a change was it. ‘ME,’ forming into a cohesive whole, the perfect hollandaise indeed, consolidating somehow like a vague shadow emerging from a thick fog to reveal itself to be an old and cherished friend that I hadn’t seen since childhood. And I became different, and yet more me than I have ever remembered being. Whereas before I was conflicted and uncertain about so many things, I am no longer. Peace and confidence reign, and in a very organic way, a way that impacts me daily in a myriad of examples throughout my days. I no longer fight with myself or with the world in general. And whereas before I was narcissistic, now I am quite the opposite. I no longer look at the world thru the lens of my own needs, but with eyes wide open to the needs of others, and with a compassion that has taken me by surprise. And whereas before I was reactive, I am now spontaneous. Who knew these two aspects of self were different sides of the same coin. Certainly not I. And I treat people differently than I used to. Sometimes I feel like I’m channeling a big ol’ auntie, you know the stereotype, all bossy and opinionated, but with a heart of gold underneath it all, and untouchable somehow. It’s all very strange and new and I am loving it. And I now feel what I feel whereas before I was detached, and frozen.

If this is a wrong path, if this state of being I am experiencing is not ‘stable wholeness,’ or ‘consolidation of self’ or integration or real hollandaise or whatever it is that everyone ‘in the know’ seems to know something about in theory but doesn't actually seem to know experientially, then I don’t care. So be it. Who I am now is magnitudes better that what I was before. There really is no comparison. I am born again, without the extraneous hogwash of superstition and intellectual hocus pocus that so often seems to muddy the waters of this so ineffable subject. I am Nanci Blu, and that is no theory.

So there you go. What began for me as an attempt to dispel an annoying neurosis turned out to be the catalyst in the reformation or consolidation of a damaged or dis-integrated psyche, a seemingly unattainable chimera I had been chasing for years. It is my hope that the above has clarified for you what to me at least, prior to this eventuality, was little more than a vague psychological concept mixed in with some still, to me, questionable anthropomorphological hoodoo thrown in. Whereas I was “… blind, but now I see…,” and conflicted and at odds with everything, I am now working with the world, and myself. I now know who I am, and am getting to know just who that is more and more and more, day by day, moment by moment, and I am immensely delighted to be making this hitherto unexpected acquaintance with myself, thank you very much. And this life altering, spectacular event, this consolidation of self, whatever it is, happened almost in spite of myself, after looking for years for something that may have been, in the final analysis, right under my nose. Like finding love when one has long since given up on it, the last thing that one expects to encounter.

Do I even pretend to understand really what it is that has happened to me, or why it is that for some reason I feel so right about all of this in spite of some of the seemingly way out there concepts involved? I do not. I only know that I will do whatever I have to do to maintain this wonderful equilibrium I have attained, this consolidation of self that is affording me so much that I had no idea I was missing. To go back to the way I was is all but impossible, and absurd on the face of it. I would rather pull out my fingernails with a plumber's wrench. That’s how significant and life altering this experience has been for me.

Is there a lesson here? Do I think everyone should rush out and put on their version of a dress rather than spend years of their life in therapy? Who knows? And yet, if you are confused about your identity, gender or otherwise, and or have some feeling or whatever hidden inside of you that won’t let you be up in spite of your attempts to deny its legitimacy, or even its existence, what have you got to lose? You can always say you are involved in a therapeutic experiment and stop, if need be, anytime you want. Question is: when all is said and done, will you really want to?

1 - Lies: Cataracts on the Soul

                                                     "What?"
                                                    "Honest!"
                                                  "Who, Me?"
                                                "The cat did it"
                                               "Read My Lips"
                                            "Next time, alright?"
                                           "Don't you trust me?"
                                         "It's for your own good."
                                       "Where did you hear that?"
"This hurts me more than it hurts you"
"I don't know what you are talking about"

I was on-line the other day, cruising the front page of The Huffington Post when I came across an article titled: “When Telling a Lie is the Right Thing to Do.” In it, the authors pose the question, “…is speaking the truth always the best thing to do, specifically when it may cause yourself and others suffering or psychological damage? Are we not also exhorted to be compassionate and wise?” The authors go on to describe a hypothetical situation where a cleric of some religious or spiritual order deftly evades the dilemmic posed to him by a "a wild-looking man with a patch on one eye" who is looking for a woman who has made unsubstantiated claims regarding his intent, and who has taken, unbeknownst to the wild looking man's arrival, refuge in the monk's cave. Let’s see: A 'man of the cloth' intervening on an apparently defenseless woman’s behalf using evasion and deceit or, some might say, cleverness and presence of mind. Sounds simple and clear cut enough.  Bad guy, good girl, and a cagey monk. Citing this story as some kind of example, the authors go on to make a case for there being, as well as ‘bad lies,’ ‘good lies.’ Lies told with the best of intentions, altruistic and otherwise positive lies that do good, (not bad), are ok, as long as ‘we are thoughtful and respectful.’ The point is made: sometimes it is good to lie, and lucky is the woman who has such a clever or gullible monk on her side, regardless of her previous and unknown actions, or the wild man's specific intentions.

I have no intention of refuting such a claim. That one can have good intention to lie to another is moot, dependant on one’s judgment, and subject only, really, to one’s own scrutiny, or the one who discovers the fact of the matter. But while we are here, let's discuss the above hypothetical. Specious, to say the least, and as such, has, or could have any number of cockamamie outcomes and or morals, depending on the bent of either the narrator or anyone who dares question it’s obvious and simplistic 'good and bad' characterizations. And when it comes to such a fundamental matter as lying, lying being at least as commonplace in the modern day zeitgeist as in any other time in recorded history, if not more so; one of the great ‘truths’ or polemics of the human conditions, and one of the ‘realities’ in Plato’s Cave that casts its shadow for the captives there to dwell upon, well, who really knows, given the situation, what one would really do if one was actually to be at the right place at the right time to have to confront such a dilemma?  But again, the point is moot, and be it upon one's own soul as it were.

But it is this matter of “when it may cause yourself (sic) and others suffering or psychological damage…” where I would like to consider the ramifications of lying. That is, with regard to the actual effects lies may have upon one’s soul, or … inner most integrity, to use a less loaded term. After all, simply put, lying is just a tool. Pure and simple. Neither good nor bad. Merely a device of some characteristic that we homo sapiens have in our survivalist bag of tricks that we can utilize whenever we feel the need of something a little extra to further our own agendas. And the main, if not only characteristic of lying is the function to conceal the truth, or a truth, from another. To deceive. To obscure or otherwise, no matter the reason for telling the lie, to hide one’s intent from the comprehension or perspective of another. That is what lying is all about, regardless of extraneous motive or intention. To not tell the truth, and in effect, conceal one’s truth from another. And it is in this regard of concealment of oneself that I have concern. For what are the ramifications of concealing ourselves from one another? Especially with regard to those whom we love and with whom we share our lives?  If one considers that the eyes are the windows of the soul, windows being those devices we use to let the light in as it were, to let us see thru to the other side of their dominion, as opposed to doors and walls per se that block the light, and that in some manner or another, lies block access to the truth or light otherwise to be seen thru those windows, how or in what way do lies block those windows? And what ultimate effect, if any, do these blockages have upon our inner most integrity? One thing is clear in this matter. Whether or not one knows if another is lying to one or not, in close relationships at least, where the participants are well known to each other, it is usually always clear when a person stops being as open as they usually are. One may not know what is wrong, but one knows something is not right; something is up, not as usual, wrong. And that is where i start to wonder as to the actual effect wrought upon each of us when we lie, regardless of those extraneous motives of various intent.

Now, I had occasion to experience a platonic intimacy in full with the pre-teener of a friend of mine just a short while ago, and what an experience that was. And this happened to be, if memory serves me well, the first time I had experienced real, 100% bottom-line intimacy since I don’t know when, possibly since I was in the womb, considering the emotional unavailability of my parents and how I had been emotionally inaccessible myself since I was about nine years of age. If this is true, and I think it is, I have thusly been existentially and fundamentally alone for perhaps all of my life, and this in itself may be why this experience had such an effect upon me. Be that as it may, this experience humbled me to my core as this child opened up to me and shared an emotional bond that i have yet, outside the womb, to experience in this world. Here I was, 60 years old, and experiencing true intimacy, eye to eye and tear for tear, with a youngling who was at the time in my charge, me being the babysitter of the evening. And it was then that I realized that I was holding back the fact that although i already knew about the subject at hand, having been privy to the original situation with the mother, I was presenting as though i was hearing this story for the first time, and that that was a lie in itself, as well intentioned and benign as any, which was interfering in the moment like a sliver in one's finger during some intense and focused digital endeavour, and just as bothersome. I considered the matter but briefly and shared my proprietary information. Confidentiality forbids further disclosure, but suffice to say my honestly was met with reason and understanding, and some concern. But the integrity of the moment held. This last action in particular highlighted and cemented the peer to peer relationship we were establishing that evening as I gave up the reigns of rational, responsibility and ‘guardianship’ to my young friend to make whatever out of it he/she would with regard to the matters at hand.
We were now equals, and we both knew it.

Did we have to pour out our whole life stories to each other, or tell each other each and every mundane and personal detail of our lives to establish and maintain this connection as long as we did?  We did not. What mattered was the ability to be able to do so should there be anything that we were holding back, and to be 100% open to each other, on any and every level. And once I disclosed the pertinent truth, I believe we were just that. 100% open to each other.Gone was the ‘adult’ and ‘child’ dynamic, the facades of convention and habit that so often get in the way of true, platonic and wholehearted intercourse, and in their place stood two human beings who had no secrets from one another, healthy and appropriate personal boundaries intact, and each of us strengthened and invigorated by the occasion. I am floored, and honoured to be given such a trust. Do i over explain or bore you with undue simplification or extraneous detail? I hope and think not, for indeed, I know or hold no other thing to be more sacred than this, such is the intrinsic value of unfettered intimacy, a living, breathing connection to the life force of another, and the telling therefore in need of clear and precise detail. And in this matter of such sacred trust I will forever remain steadfast and true. For together we stand, united, and otherwise, alone and forsaken we make our way to our solitary exits.

And this is where I take exception to this article that promotes ‘the good lie,’ and trusts to subjectivity and ‘good intentions’ to decide when a thing is ‘for someone else’s own good,’ or what have you. Myriad and varied are the justifications for lying, and the lie to oneself perhaps the easiest to justify, once that habit has taken hold. And who knows what might have been had one resorted to another recourse than the white lie, the expedient thing, the PC thing to do?  Had I not gone with "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth," who knows whether or no I would now have made this life affirming connection with my young friend, and made myself and my companion available to the ineffable but oh so very real value one gets out of seeing ‘eye to eye’ with another, of sharing such a fundamental connection, a “genuine harmony between two people[i]” that supercharges one for who knows how long, the spring in one’s step renewed, one’s outlook out. I am doubtful to think it would have been so. And to think that all one has to do to recharge one’s ‘spiritual battery,’ as it were, and reciprocally, is to be with and openly, those with whom we can see eye to eye, again and again, and share the energy and life force that is the product of such fresh and wholesome intimacy. And is the antithesis of this not the real cost of lying?

One wonders, also, in this age of disintegrating nuclear family and the seemingly ever widening gap between parents and their offspring, just how much this ‘gap’ can be attributed to the stockpile of lies, deceptions and such we perpetrate upon our children in the name of expediency, good intentions, discipline and the like.Is this all really necessary, or do we do so out of habit and or the lessons that we were taught in the past?

Lie if you will. There are a host of ‘good,’ ‘sensible,’ and ‘well intentioned’ reasons out there to justify one’s actions in this regard. And who’s to say what will become of it, lies being just ephemera and of no real consequence in the end? Woody Allen in "Crimes and Misdemeanours" poses such a dynamic. Or, are lies indeed cataracts on the windows of our soul, ever growing and obscuring our ‘sight’ as the layers of deception and insensitivity increase over time, and our ability to experience life to the fullest is obscured and dulled by these layers of deceit? Of course, it’s all a judgment call, and we ourselves the only ones to know when considering whether “speaking the truth (is) the best thing to do.” And perhaps that is the greatest price to pay in this matter of lying, to be the only one to know as we barricade ourselves behind an ever growing film of white-lies, half-truths, and equivocations eloquent, specious, well-meaning and or otherwise.
